African language interpreters and translators

From Amharic and Tigrinya to Lingala, Yoruba and Zulu: interpreting and translation in African languages, including many that are hard to source.

97 African languages, from the Horn of Africa to the Cape

SILA Linguists® works across 97 African languages and varieties, many of them hard to source elsewhere. In the Horn of Africa we cover Somali, Tigrinya, Tigre, Amharic, Oromo, Afar, Saho, Blin and Sidama. West African requests run from Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Twi and Ewe to Wolof, Fulani, Bambara, Mandinka, Krio and Nigerian Pidgin. For Central and East Africa we provide Lingala, Kikongo, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Swahili, Luganda, Dinka and Nuer, and for Southern Africa Zulu, Xhosa, Shona and Setswana.

Matching matters. Kirundi and Kinyarwanda are close, yet a speaker from Burundi expects an interpreter of their own language, and a Dinka speaker from Bor may not follow every regional term used elsewhere. Our African language linguists are available throughout the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Interpreting in person, by phone and on video

Our African language interpreters attend court hearings, GP and hospital appointments and social work visits face-to-face. Telephone interpreting runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting works through our app or your own platform. For seminars, trade missions and international meetings we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI), alongside community and escort interpreting. In sensitive interviews, for example about violence or reproductive health, you can ask for a female or male interpreter.

Certified translation, transcription and LADO

Our translators handle birth and marriage certificates, degree certificates, academic transcripts and court judgments, keeping the spelling of names consistent across every document, whether the source is in Ge'ez script for Amharic and Tigrinya or Latin script for Somali and Swahili. Certified translations carry a signed statement of accuracy accepted by UK courts, the Home Office, universities and employers.

We also transcribe recordings with time stamps and translate them, subtitle video, and carry out language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) and nationality assessment.

Who our African language linguists can support

Our vetted, trained and qualified linguists can support solicitors, courts, police forces, immigration and asylum teams, the NHS, mental health services, social services, housing providers and charities in these languages, and we localise content for energy, engineering and finance firms working in Africa. With SILA Linguists® you deal with one project team, work only with vetted professional linguists, and every assignment is covered by NDAs and UK GDPR.
