Kikongo interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Kikongo is the language of the Kongo people of the lower Congo River, spoken in DR Congo, the Republic of the Congo and northern Angola. We provide Kikongo interpreters and translators matched to the speaker's country and variety.
Kikongo
konKikongo (Kongo) is a Bantu language cluster spoken along the lower Congo River and the Atlantic coast, in Kongo Central province and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the south of the Republic of the Congo, and in the Angolan provinces of Uíge, Zaire and Cabinda. It was the language of the historic Kingdom of Kongo and was among the first Bantu languages to be written, in missionary texts from the 17th century.
Kongo is a cluster of related languages, and speakers recognise many regional varieties, including Kisikongo in Angola, Kiyombe and Kimanyanga in DR Congo, and Laari around Brazzaville. Kikongo is not the same as Kituba (Kikongo ya leta), a Kongo-based lingua franca used more widely in western DR Congo and the Republic of the Congo. Angolan speakers usually also speak Portuguese, while Congolese speakers use French and often Lingala.

Kikongo was the language of the historic Kingdom of Kongo and is still spoken along the lower Congo River and the Atlantic coast, in Kongo Central and Kinshasa, in southern Congo-Brazzaville and in Angola's Uíge, Zaire and Cabinda provinces. SILA Linguists® provides Kikongo interpreting, translation and transcription to clients across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Angolan and Congolese Kikongo differ in loanwords and vocabulary, and some clients say Kikongo when they mean Kituba, so we confirm country, region and variety first.
Regional varieties include Kisikongo in Angola, Kiyombe and Kimanyanga in the DRC and Laari around Brazzaville. Angolan speakers usually also speak Portuguese, Congolese speakers French and often Lingala. In asylum and legal work, place names, administrative terms and family structures matter, so we prefer an interpreter from the client's own country; relay through French or Portuguese can be arranged where needed.
Kikongo interpreting is available face to face for asylum interviews, court hearings, GP and hospital appointments and family and social services meetings, over the phone at any hour, including weekends and public holidays, and on screen via the SILA Linguists® app or whichever video system your team already uses. We can also provide interpreters for church and community meetings and events. A female or male interpreter can be provided on request.
Civil documents from the DRC and Congo-Brazzaville are issued in French and Angolan documents in Portuguese, so certified translation for UK authorities usually starts from those languages. Each certified translation carries our signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK bodies such as the Home Office, the courts and admissions offices, and names are kept exactly as they appear in passports.
For community material, health leaflets and church publications in Kikongo, spelling differs between Angolan conventions, shaped by Portuguese, and Congolese conventions, shaped by French. Tell us who the readers are and our translators follow the right norms.
Kikongo recordings, whether interviews, phone calls or sermons, are typed up line by line with time codes, rendered into English, and annotated wherever the speaker slips into French, Portuguese or Lingala. When it is unclear whether a person grew up in the DRC, Congo-Brazzaville or Angola, our specialist analysts can carry out LADO, the language analysis used to determine origin.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Kikongo linguists can support asylum caseworkers and immigration solicitors, criminal and family courts, NHS trusts, children's services and Kikongo-speaking congregations. A single coordinator follows your case from first call to final delivery, and every linguist we send has been vetted and signs a non-disclosure agreement in line with UK GDPR.
