Face-to-face
Cameroonian Pidgin interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Cameroonian Pidgin, or Kamtok, is the shared street, market and family language of much of Cameroon. We provide interpreters who grew up with it and who also know Cameroonian English and French.
Cameroonian Pidgin
wesCameroon has two official languages, French and English, and a great many local languages. Between them sits Cameroonian Pidgin English, an English-based creole that many Cameroonians use to talk across language boundaries: at the market, on buses, in church and often at home. It is strongest in the Northwest and Southwest regions, in the Littoral, including the port city of Douala, and in the West region, and it is also heard in Yaoundé and in the French-speaking parts of the country.
Kamtok belongs to the same Atlantic family as Nigerian Pidgin and Krio, and everyday conversation between Cameroonians and Nigerians usually works. The vocabulary is not identical, though: Cameroonian Pidgin borrows from French and from Cameroonian languages, and many expressions are unknown in Lagos. In the cities, young people also mix Pidgin, French and English in a slang known as Camfranglais.

Cameroonian Pidgin English, or Kamtok, is the language many Cameroonians use at the market, on buses, in church and often at home, especially in the Northwest and Southwest regions, Douala and the West. SILA Linguists® provides Kamtok interpreters, transcribers and translators to asylum, police, health and housing services in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. It is related to Nigerian Pidgin but borrows from French and Cameroonian languages, and many expressions are unknown in Lagos, so we always book a Cameroonian Pidgin specialist.
A Cameroonian client may speak Pidgin, Cameroonian English, French and a home language such as one of the Grassfields languages. Someone educated in French may prefer Pidgin to English at a police station or a GP surgery, while a speaker from Bamenda or Buea may move freely between Pidgin and English. Pidgin in Bamenda, Buea and Douala also differs in accent and expressions, so we ask for the client's home region and age.
Telephone and video interpreting, available at any hour through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform, suit housing, health and solicitor appointments. For court hearings, asylum interviews and long police interviews, an interpreter can attend in person. Many of our Kamtok interpreters also speak French and Cameroonian English, which helps when a conversation changes language, and a male or female interpreter can be assigned.
No Pidgin spelling has official status. Church publications, radio scripts and campaigns each follow their own habits, from English-like spellings to more phonetic ones, so we agree a convention with you based on your readers before translating community information or campaign material.
Cameroonian birth certificates, school records and court papers are issued in French or English, so certified translation usually concerns French documents; we supply these with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. French or English Cameroonian papers bound for North America are certified as the receiving authority specifies. Witness statements and messages written in Pidgin are translated directly.
Our transcribers are prepared for Kamtok voice notes, recorded interviews and phone calls. Transcripts arrive with time stamps and an English translation, with Camfranglais slang and switches into French clearly marked. Where an asylum claim turns on whether a person comes from Cameroon's English-speaking regions, our specialist analysts can provide LADO.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Kamtok linguists can support asylum advisers, police and courts, NHS and mental health services, housing providers, social care teams and community organisations supporting Cameroonians. A single coordinator manages every booking, and our vetted linguists sign non-disclosure agreements and protect personal data under UK GDPR. Cameroonian Pidgin interpreters can support asylum and refugee hearings, police and hospitals in the US and Canada, by video or telephone.
