Chuukese interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Chuukese is the language of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia and of large Micronesian communities in Guam and Hawaii. SILA Linguists provides Chuukese interpreting and translation for courts, healthcare and public services.
Kapasen Chuuk
chkChuukese, formerly called Trukese, is an Austronesian language of the Micronesian branch of Oceanic. It is spoken in the Chuuk Lagoon and is the largest language of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), where English is the official language of government. The outer islands of Chuuk speak closely related Chuukic languages, such as Mortlockese and Puluwatese, which are usually listed separately.
Under the Compact of Free Association, citizens of the FSM can live and work in the United States, and many Chuukese families have moved to Guam, Hawaii and the US mainland. Chuukese interpreting is often needed there in courts, healthcare and public services.

SILA Linguists® provides Chuukese interpreters and translators for courts, healthcare and public health services, social services and housing teams, schools and child welfare, and immigration and employment settings. Chuukese, formerly called Trukese, is an Austronesian language of the Micronesian branch of Oceanic, spoken in the Chuuk Lagoon and the largest language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Under the Compact of Free Association, many Chuukese families have moved to Guam, Hawaii and the US mainland.
Chuukese interpreting is often needed in courts, clinics and housing services wherever Chuukese families have settled. Many younger Chuukese learned English at school, but proficiency varies, and legal and medical terminology is often unfamiliar, so a qualified interpreter protects both client and service.
We ask whether the client is from the Chuuk Lagoon or the outer islands, where closely related languages such as Mortlockese and Puluwatese are spoken. Outer-island speakers usually understand lagoon Chuukese, but some prefer an interpreter who knows their own variety. Chuukese culture places emphasis on respect between generations and between men and women, and many clients prefer an interpreter of the same gender for health or family matters, which we arrange on request.
Our Chuukese interpreters work by telephone at any hour, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and face to face where local interpreters are based. Court and tribunal work is interpreted consecutively, and for public health campaigns or community meetings we can provide interpreters who address a whole group.
Chuukese is written in the Latin alphabet, but spelling is not fully standardised, and individuals and churches use different conventions, especially for vowels. We agree spelling with you and favour clear, plain language in court notices, health information, housing letters and school communications. Official documents from the FSM are usually in English, so certified translation from Chuukese is mostly needed for personal letters, messages or statements used as evidence, which we certify with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the courts. Letters or statements needed by a US court or agency can be certified with the translator's signed certificate of accuracy.
We transcribe Chuukese recordings, including police interviews, calls and community meetings, with time codes and an English version, and subtitle public health and education video for Pacific island communities.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Chuukese linguists can support courts and public defenders, hospitals and public health programmes, social services and housing providers, schools and child welfare teams, and employers. SILA Linguists® gives each case one coordinator, and every linguist signs an NDA and follows UK GDPR. Chuukese interpreters can support hospitals, courts, schools and social services in Hawaii, Guam and the US mainland, as well as clients in the UK.
