Tooro interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Tooro, known to its speakers as Rutooro, is a Bantu language of western Uganda, centred on the Fort Portal area and the historic Tooro Kingdom.
Rutooro
ttjRutooro is spoken in the Kabarole district and surrounding districts of western Uganda, near the Rwenzori mountains. It belongs to the Rutara group of Great Lakes Bantu languages, together with Runyoro, Runyankore (Nkore), Rukiga and Haya across the border in Tanzania.
Rutooro and Runyoro are so close that they have long shared a written standard, often referred to as Runyoro-Rutooro, used in schools, broadcasting and religious publications. Speakers also commonly use English, Uganda's official language, and many speak Swahili or Luganda.

Rutooro is spoken in Kabarole and the surrounding districts of western Uganda, in the shadow of the Rwenzori mountains. It belongs to the Rutara group of Great Lakes Bantu languages with Runyoro, Runyankore, Rukiga and Haya, and shares a written standard, Runyoro-Rutooro, with its close neighbour. SILA Linguists® provides Rutooro interpreters, translators and transcribers for healthcare and mental health appointments, immigration and asylum casework, community and family services, and research teams in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
Rutooro speakers generally understand Runyoro well and often Runyankore too, but we recommend requesting Rutooro specifically, and telling us if the client prefers Runyoro, so we find the closest match. Rutooro also uses polite forms of address and traditional praise names, empaako, as a sign of respect, and an interpreter who knows these conventions helps a conversation begin well.
Many speakers also use English, Swahili or Luganda, but people often prefer their first language for a mental health assessment, a family services meeting or an asylum interview. Video interpreting works especially well for Rutooro because it reaches linguists who may not live near the appointment; sessions run in the SILA Linguists® app or the software you normally use for calls. Telephone interpreting is open around the clock, and in-person attendance is arranged where possible. Clients may ask for a female or male interpreter.
Rutooro uses the Latin alphabet without special characters, and our translators follow the shared Runyoro-Rutooro conventions used in schools, broadcasting and religious publishing. We translate health and mental health information, family services letters and community materials into Rutooro, and statements, letters and messages into English.
Official Ugandan documents are normally issued in English, so certified work usually concerns Rutooro-language evidence. Each certified translation is signed to confirm its accuracy and is accepted by UK authorities, whether it goes into an immigration file or to a court, a university or an employer.
Researchers working in western Uganda often record interviews in Rutooro. We transcribe them with time references and an English rendering, marking English, Swahili or Luganda passages. For asylum claims, SILA Linguists® can also provide language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO).
Our vetted, trained and qualified Rutooro linguists can support healthcare and mental health services, immigration and asylum practitioners, community and family services, universities, and charities supporting Ugandan families. Whatever the setting, the aim is the same: a client who feels respected and a record you can rely on. A single coordinator manages your work, our linguists are vetted and every file stays confidential under NDAs and UK GDPR.
