Brazilian Portuguese interpreting and translation

Brazilian Portuguese is the form of Portuguese used across Brazil. SILA Linguists provides interpreters and translators who work in Brazilian Portuguese specifically, rather than treating it as interchangeable with European Portuguese.

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, and Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) is by far the most widely spoken form of the language worldwide. It shares its grammar and most of its vocabulary with European Portuguese, and speakers understand each other, but the differences are noticeable in pronunciation, everyday vocabulary, forms of address and sentence structure.

Familiar examples include ônibus for bus (autocarro in Portugal), trem for train (comboio) and celular for mobile phone (telemóvel). Brazilians typically use você for 'you' in situations where speakers in Portugal would use tu or a different form, and Brazilian speech favours constructions such as estou fazendo ('I am doing') where Portugal prefers estou a fazer. A shared orthographic agreement has brought spelling closer together, but differences remain, for example fato and facto, or econômico and económico.

There is also significant regional variation within Brazil, from the speech of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to the North-East and the South, and many Brazilian communities live in the UK, Europe, North America and Japan.

How we help

Portuguese (Brazil) services

SILA Linguists®

Brazilian Portuguese interpreting, translation and localisation from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Brazilian Portuguese interpreters, translators and localisation specialists for legal teams, healthcare and social care providers, universities and businesses across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) is the most widely spoken form of Portuguese, and although Brazilians and Portuguese understand each other, accent, vocabulary and forms of address differ noticeably. We book linguists who speak and write Brazilian Portuguese naturally, so your message sounds right to Brazilian ears.

Brazilian Portuguese interpreting services

An interpreter from Portugal will usually be understood, but in mental health, child protection or a GP surgery, a distant or formal tone can affect trust. That is why we prioritise interpreters who use você naturally, say ônibus rather than autocarro, and are at ease with regional speech from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to the North-East and the South.

Our Brazilian Portuguese interpreting covers face-to-face appointments, hearings and site visits; telephone interpreting, available 24 hours a day, every day; and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. For board meetings, product launches, investor events and training we supply consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreters (RSI), and conference teams for larger events.

Translation, certified translation and localisation

Contracts, financial reports, employment documents, medical records and court bundles all need Brazilian spelling, terminology and date and number formats. Our translators work into and out of English, and for websites, apps, software and marketing we provide full localisation rather than a lightly adjusted European Portuguese text. We also offer AI-assisted translation with human post-editing for large volumes of content.

Documents coming from Brazil for use in the UK receive certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, universities and international bodies. Papers going to Canada can be translated by a translator certified with a provincial association, while US filings receive a signed certificate of translation accuracy. For documents going to Brazil, Brazilian authorities generally require a sworn translation (tradução juramentada) by a public translator registered there, and Brazil is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so we advise you to check what the receiving body needs.

Transcription and subtitling

We transcribe interviews, meetings, podcasts and recorded evidence in Brazilian Portuguese, with time stamps and translation, and create subtitles for marketing video, e-learning and broadcast content. Multimedia localisation is available too, adapting on-screen text and captions so that each version of a video feels local to Brazilian viewers rather than imported.

Sectors we support in Brazilian Portuguese

Our vetted, trained and qualified Brazilian Portuguese linguists can support solicitors, courts and immigration advisers, NHS and social care services, schools and universities recruiting Brazilian students, banks and insurers, technology companies, energy and engineering firms, and media producers. Whatever the brief, one project team at SILA Linguists® manages it under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Brazilian families in North America are covered too: our Portuguese interpreters can join hearings before US immigration judges, Canadian refugee proceedings, hospital appointments and school meetings.

Good to know

Working with Portuguese (Brazil)

Interpreting

  • For Brazilian clients we aim to book interpreters who speak Brazilian Portuguese naturally. A speaker from Portugal will usually be understood, but accent, vocabulary and forms of address can sound distant or formal, which matters in healthcare, mental health and child protection settings where trust and ease of communication are essential.
  • Brazilian Portuguese interpreting is available face to face, by video (VRI) and by telephone (OPI) 24/7, as well as conference and remote simultaneous interpreting for business events and training.

Translation

  • Translations for a Brazilian audience should be written in pt-BR, with Brazilian spelling, vocabulary, date and number formats and terms used by Brazilian institutions. Software, websites and marketing content need full localisation, not a European Portuguese text with small changes.
  • For documents used officially in Brazil, Brazilian authorities generally require a sworn translation (tradução juramentada) by a public translator registered in Brazil, and Brazil is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. For documents coming from Brazil for use in the UK, our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies. Ask the receiving body which format it needs. For documents going to authorities in the United States or Canada, we arrange the certification those authorities require, whether that is a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities or a translator certified by a Canadian provincial association.
