Face-to-face
Mixtec interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Mixtec is one of the largest Indigenous language groups in Mexico and is increasingly needed in the United States. Because Mixtec varies greatly from town to town, SILA Linguists matches each Mixtec interpreter to the speaker's home community.
Tu'un Savi
Mixtec (Mixteco in Spanish; Tu'un Savi, 'language of the rain', in many varieties) belongs to the Mixtecan branch of the Oto-Manguean family, together with Triqui and Cuicatec. It is spoken in the Mixteca region where Oaxaca, Guerrero and Puebla meet, Large Mixtec communities also live in Baja California, Mexico City and the United States, particularly in California's agricultural regions.
Mixtec is best understood as a group of related languages. It has a great many variants. Speakers from different valleys or towns, for example from the Mixteca Alta, Mixteca Baja and the coast, may not understand each other. Mixtec languages are tonal, so changes in pitch distinguish words that otherwise sound the same.
The Mixtec people have a long written history: pre-Hispanic Mixtec codices such as the Codex Zouche-Nuttall record genealogies and histories in a pictorial writing system.

SILA Linguists® provides Mixtec interpreters and translators for courts, immigration and asylum services, agricultural employers and labour rights advocates, maternity and healthcare providers, and schools and child welfare teams. Mixtec, known in many varieties as Tu'un Savi, 'language of the rain', is spoken in the Mixteca region where Oaxaca, Guerrero and Puebla meet, and by large communities in Baja California, Mexico City and the United States, particularly California's agricultural regions.
Mixtec is best understood as a group of related languages. It has a great many variants, and speakers from the Mixteca Alta, the Mixteca Baja and the coast may not understand each other. A Mixtec interpreter from another area may speak a variety the client does not understand, so please give us the municipality and, if possible, the village. We may ask interpreter and client to talk briefly before the session to confirm understanding.
Relay through Spanish is common: one interpreter between Mixtec and Spanish, a second between Spanish and English. Mixtec is often needed in legal settings, where accurate matching matters most. We provide Mixtec interpreters face to face where local linguists are based, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and by telephone at any hour. A female interpreter can be booked for maternity care.
Mixtec languages are tonal, and community orthographies mark tone in different ways for different variants. Written Mixtec reaches fewer readers than spoken Mixtec, so for workplace safety notices, labour rights information and health messages we often recommend audio or video versions recorded in the right variant, alongside or instead of text.
Mexican civil documents are issued in Spanish. Our certified English translations of birth certificates, identity papers and court records carry a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Certified English versions for US immigration purposes carry the translator's signed certificate of accuracy.
We transcribe Mixtec interviews, recorded evidence and workplace investigations with time codes and an English version, noting the variant. The Mixtec also have a long written history, from pre-Hispanic codices such as the Codex Zouche-Nuttall, and museums and researchers can ask us for related translation work. For asylum cases where origin is disputed, language analysis (LADO) can be commissioned.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Mixtec linguists can support courts and solicitors, immigration and asylum services, agricultural employers and labour rights organisations, hospitals and maternity units, schools and child welfare teams. SILA Linguists® gives each case one coordinator, and every linguist signs a non-disclosure agreement and works within UK GDPR. Mixtec interpreting covers American settings too: immigration court, public defenders, community health programmes, maternity wards and schools, with the right variety confirmed first.
