Lingala interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Lingala is one of the main languages of the two Congos, the everyday language of Kinshasa and Brazzaville and the language of much Congolese popular music. SILA Linguists® provides Lingala interpreters and translators for public service, legal and commercial clients.
Lingála
linLingala grew from a trade language used along the middle Congo River and spread rapidly in the colonial period through the army, administration, towns and missions. Today it is one of the four national languages of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, alongside Kikongo, Swahili and Tshiluba, with French as the official language. In the Republic of the Congo it is a national language with Kituba. It is the main language of the western DRC, including Kinshasa, and of the north of the Republic of the Congo, including Brazzaville.
Many Lingala speakers learnt it as a second language and also speak a regional or ethnic language. Spoken Lingala in Kinshasa borrows heavily from French and changes quickly, with urban slang that older and rural speakers may not use. A more conservative literary form, associated with church and educational writing, has a fuller system of noun-class prefixes than everyday urban speech.
Lingala is written in the Latin alphabet, including the open vowels ɛ and ɔ. Tone marks appear in careful or teaching texts but are often left out in everyday writing.

Lingala began as a trade language on the middle Congo River and is now the main language of Kinshasa and the western Democratic Republic of the Congo, and of Brazzaville and the north of the Republic of the Congo. SILA Linguists® provides Lingala interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration teams, courts, police, solicitors, health services and humanitarian organisations across the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Because many speakers learned Lingala as a second language, we check whether it is truly your client's strongest one.
A client from eastern DRC may be more comfortable in Swahili, while others prefer French or another Congolese language, so we ask whether they come from Kinshasa, Brazzaville or elsewhere before we book. Urban Lingala is full of French words, especially for official, medical and legal topics, and our interpreters handle this mixing without leaving terms unexplained.
Many cases involve conflict, displacement or gender-based violence. Our Lingala interpreters are prepared for distressing testimony, and clients can ask for a female or male interpreter. We cover Home Office interviews, tribunals, police interviews, criminal courts, solicitors' conferences, maternity units, GP surgeries and community health sessions. You can choose face-to-face attendance, telephone interpreting day and night throughout the year, or video through the SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses. Church events, community meetings and humanitarian briefings can be covered with consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting.
Official documents from both Congos are almost always in French, so certified translation of birth certificates, school diplomas, court judgments and identity papers usually starts from French. SILA Linguists® handles that alongside the Lingala-language evidence in the same case, and every certified translation carries our signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, recruiters and other UK authorities.
Lingala translation is common for public health information, community notices, personal statements and messages. We decide with you whether the text should follow an urban, French-influenced style or a more formal register, and we use fonts that support ɛ and ɔ, checking combined accents if tone marks are wanted.
Audio and video in Lingala, from interviews and voice notes to music and social media clips used as evidence, are transcribed with timings marked and translated into English, with French passages marked. We can also subtitle awareness films for Congolese communities. For protection claims, language analysis for determining origin (LADO) can help establish whether a person was raised in the DRC, the Republic of the Congo or elsewhere.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Lingala linguists can support immigration and asylum services, police, courts and solicitors, NHS maternity and health teams, and humanitarian and public information projects. You work with one project team, and confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protect every file.
