Levantine Arabic interpreting and translation

Levantine Arabic covers the spoken Arabic of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestinian communities. The varieties are mutually intelligible, but regional matching still helps in legal and medical work.

Levantine Arabic, also known as Shami, is spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian territories, among Arab citizens of Israel, in Turkey's Hatay province and in a large diaspora. Northern and southern Levantine speech are increasingly treated as one closely related variety.

Broadly, Syrian and Lebanese speech forms a northern group and Jordanian and Palestinian speech a southern group, with urban, rural and Bedouin varieties within each. Damascus, Aleppo, Beirut, Amman and Jerusalem each have recognisable accents. Rural and Bedouin speech, for example in Hauran or eastern Syria, can differ markedly from the city varieties.

Lebanese speakers often mix in French and English, while Syrian and Jordanian speakers may use more English or Turkish loanwords depending on background.

How we help

Levantine Arabic services

SILA Linguists®

Levantine Arabic interpreters for Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Palestinian speakers with SILA Linguists®

Levantine Arabic, or Shami, is spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the Palestinian territories, by Arab citizens of Israel, in Turkey's Hatay province and across a large diaspora. SILA Linguists® provides Levantine Arabic interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum and resettlement services, hospitals, mental health teams, courts, schools and media companies wherever they are based, from London to Berlin, Toronto and Sydney. Damascus, Aleppo, Beirut, Amman and Jerusalem each have recognisable accents, and rural speech in Hauran or eastern Syria can differ markedly, so we match by country and, where possible, by region.

Levantine Arabic interpreting for refugees, patients and families

An interpreter from anywhere in the Levant will usually be understood, but in asylum, court and mental health settings we match more closely, by country and by urban or rural background. Some people from Syria are Kurdish, Armenian, Turkmen or Neo-Aramaic speakers, and we check the person's preferred language before confirming.

Face-to-face Levantine Arabic interpreting supports Home Office interviews, resettlement casework, GP and hospital appointments, therapy sessions, police interviews, family courts and school meetings. Phone interpreting is staffed at all hours for urgent calls, and remote sessions can be held by video on the SILA Linguists® app or a familiar tool such as Teams. Same-gender interpreters are often preferred for healthcare and sensitive interviews. Press events, panels and conferences can have consecutive or simultaneous Levantine Arabic interpreters, in the room or working remotely through RSI.

Translation and certified translation

Official documents from Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestinian authorities are in Modern Standard Arabic, and each authority uses its own document formats and terms. We translate family registers, civil records, school certificates, university transcripts, court documents and medical records, and each certified version is signed as a faithful translation, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, the courts and universities, and by employers.

Colloquial Levantine is used in subtitling, advertising and community information, and we choose spelling and vocabulary suited to the target audience, whether Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian or Palestinian.

Levantine Arabic transcription and LADO

We transcribe recorded interviews, evidence, podcasts and broadcast content, time-coding every passage and adding an English version, and we note the French and English loanwords common in Lebanese speech. Where someone's Syrian or Palestinian origin is questioned, SILA Linguists® arranges LADO and nationality assessment.
