Malinke, also called Maninka, is a major Manding language of Upper Guinea and neighbouring parts of West Africa. We provide Malinke interpreters and translators matched to the speaker's country and variety.
Maninkakan
emkMalinke (Maninka, Maninkakan) is a Manding language of the Mande family, at the heart of the historic Mali Empire. It is spoken mainly in Upper Guinea around Kankan, Siguiri and Kouroussa, in south-western Mali around Kita, in north-western Côte d'Ivoire, in south-eastern Senegal, and by smaller communities in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Eastern Maninka in Guinea and Western Maninka in Mali and Senegal are often distinguished.
Malinke forms a continuum with Bambara, Dyula and Mandinka, and speakers can often follow one another with some effort. The Guinean scholar Solomana Kanté created the N'Ko alphabet, written right to left, for Manding languages; it is widely used by Malinke speakers today alongside the Latin alphabet.

Malinke, or Maninkakan, is the language at the heart of the old Mali Empire. Today it is spoken around Kankan, Siguiri and Kouroussa in Upper Guinea, around Kita in south-western Mali, in north-western Côte d'Ivoire and south-eastern Senegal, and by communities in Liberia and Sierra Leone. SILA Linguists® provides Malinke interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum services, courts, health providers and councils across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond, and we match each interpreter to the client's country and region.
A speaker from Kankan and one from Kita or Odienné use different vocabulary and carry different second languages. Malinke also forms a continuum with Bambara, Dyula and Mandinka, so speakers can often follow one another with effort; for asylum, legal and medical interviews, however, a first-language Malinke interpreter gives the most reliable detail. Relay through French can be arranged where needed.
Our interpreters attend Home Office interviews, tribunals, court hearings, GP and hospital appointments and social services meetings in person, and are available by phone, including out of hours, and by video, which makes it easier to bring in an interpreter from exactly the right region. On request, we arrange a female or male interpreter, often important for women describing personal or medical matters.
Script is the first decision. Many Malinke readers value N'Ko, the alphabet created by the Guinean scholar Solomana Kanté, which is written right to left and needs proper fonts and layout. Latin-script Malinke follows national orthographies that differ between Guinea and Mali. We agree the approach for health leaflets, community notices and consent material before translation begins.
Civil records and court documents from Guinea, Mali and Côte d'Ivoire are in French, so certified French to English translation is usually needed. We deliver it signed and declared accurate, accepted by the Home Office, courts and universities, with names matching the passport. Names of clans, villages and Guinean prefectures are checked against the original spelling so that they line up with any earlier Home Office record.
Malinke recordings are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with French and Bambara passages flagged. For asylum claims involving Guinea, Mali or Côte d'Ivoire, SILA Linguists® can arrange LADO analysis from specialists in Manding languages.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Malinke linguists can support immigration and asylum teams, solicitors and courts, NHS providers, social services and community information projects. One coordinator handles your bookings from first enquiry to completed assignment, and every linguist is vetted and bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR, so sensitive testimony from West African clients stays protected.
