Gogo interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Gogo is the language of the Wagogo people of central Tanzania, around the capital, Dodoma. We can arrange Gogo interpreting, often supported by Swahili.
Cigogo
gogGogo (Cigogo or Chigogo) is a Bantu language spoken mainly in the Dodoma region and parts of Singida, in the dry central plateau of Tanzania. The Wagogo are traditionally agro-pastoralists, and much of the vocabulary of everyday life relates to cattle, rainfall and farming.
Gogo has regional dialects, often described as western, central and eastern, which differ in pronunciation and vocabulary but are mutually intelligible. It is closely related to Kaguru and is a neighbour of Rangi, Sandawe and Hehe.
As with other Tanzanian community languages, Swahili is the language of schooling and administration, and most Gogo speakers are bilingual. Gogo is written in the Latin alphabet, and religious and educational materials exist, but there is no formal standard used in schools.

Gogo, or Cigogo, is spoken by the Wagogo of Tanzania's dry central plateau, mainly in the Dodoma region and parts of Singida. Traditionally agro-pastoralists, Gogo speakers use a rich vocabulary for cattle, rain and farming, and the western, central and eastern dialects remain mutually intelligible. Almost everyone is bilingual in Swahili. SILA Linguists® helps health services, community organisations, legal advisers and research teams across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield decide whether Gogo or Swahili will serve each person best, then provides the right linguist.
For a younger, school-educated client, a Swahili interpreter is often enough, and we can supply one quickly. Older people, those with little formal schooling, and anyone discussing something painful or complex, such as a diagnosis, a dispute over land or a family crisis, are often better served in Gogo itself. Knowing which part of Dodoma or Singida a client comes from helps us find the closest match.
Remote formats are normally the most practical route for a language with few speakers abroad. Our telephone interpreting operates at every hour of every day, and video sessions run through the SILA Linguists® app or the platform you prefer. Where a Gogo interpreter cannot be sourced in time, relay through Swahili is an option. Face-to-face attendance is arranged when a suitable linguist can travel, and consecutive interpreting suits focus groups and village-level research interviews.
Most Gogo readers prefer Swahili in writing, so written translation into Gogo is uncommon. When a project does need it, perhaps a health message for pastoralist families or a research information sheet, we agree spelling conventions with the end user and translate in the Latin alphabet. We also translate Gogo letters, messages and recorded statements into English.
Civil documents from the Dodoma region, from birth certificates to school results, are issued in Swahili or English. Our certified translation from Swahili carries a signed accuracy statement, accepted by courts, the Home Office, employers and other UK authorities.
Researchers in agriculture, health and development often record interviews in central Tanzania. We transcribe Gogo and mixed Gogo and Swahili audio with time stamps, label each language and provide an English translation ready for analysis or reporting. Short community videos can also be subtitled.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Gogo and Swahili linguists can support hospitals and clinics, community and voluntary services, legal advice providers and academic and NGO research projects. You work with one coordinating team, every linguist is vetted, and confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR apply to all material.
