Amharic is a Semitic language, related to Tigrinya, Tigre and the Gurage languages, and more distantly to Arabic and Hebrew. It is the first language of the Amhara people and is spoken as a second language by millions of Ethiopians of other backgrounds. It is the main language of national administration and the media and, in many areas, of education beyond primary level. Several Ethiopian regional states also use it as their working language.

Amharic is written in the Ethiopic script, known as fidel, an abugida in which each character represents a consonant combined with a vowel. The script was inherited from Ge'ez, the classical language that remains in liturgical use in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Amharic has around 33 basic consonant forms, each with seven main vowel orders, plus additional labialised forms.

Regional differences exist, for example between the speech of Gondar, Gojjam, Wollo and Addis Ababa, but they rarely prevent understanding. The variety of Addis Ababa is the basis for most broadcast and written usage. Large Amharic-speaking communities live in the UK, the United States, Canada, Israel, Sweden and the Gulf states.

How we help

Amharic services

SILA Linguists®

Amharic interpreters and certified Amharic translation with SILA Linguists®

Amharic is the working language of Ethiopia's federal government and the language millions of Ethiopians use alongside their mother tongue. SILA Linguists® provides Amharic interpreting, translation and transcription to public services, legal teams and businesses across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Because many Oromo, Tigrayan, Sidama and Wolaytta speakers use Amharic as a second language, we first check that it really is your client's strongest language, and we offer a first-language alternative where that serves them better.

Amharic interpreting services in every format

Our Amharic interpreters work at asylum interviews and immigration tribunals, police stations and criminal courts, maternity units and GP surgeries, school admissions meetings and housing appointments. You can book them on site, over the telephone at any time of day or night on every day of the year, or on video through the SILA Linguists® app or the software you normally use for calls.

Amharic grammar marks respect through honorific pronouns and verb forms for elders and people in authority, and our interpreters carry that register across into English so a speaker's courtesy is not mistaken for evasiveness. Political and ethnic tensions in Ethiopia can affect trust, so every interpreter remains strictly impartial and declares any conflict of interest. A female interpreter is often preferred in maternity care and in cases involving violence, and we arrange this on request. For conferences, diaspora events and business delegations we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous Amharic interpreting.

Translating Amharic documents in fidel script

Amharic is written in the Ethiopic script, fidel, and needs fonts with full Unicode support. We proofread the final typeset file rather than a draft, because character substitution is a common fault when fonts fall back. Ethiopian certificates also use the Ethiopian calendar, around seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one, so our certified Amharic translations show both dates or a clear conversion.

Personal names follow the given name plus father's name pattern, and we keep that order and spelling identical across birth and marriage certificates, school records, court judgments and identity papers. Each certified translation carries a statement of accuracy, signed and dated by us, accepted by admissions offices, the Home Office and other UK authorities. For US filings, Ethiopian records come with a certificate of accuracy, and for Canadian offices we can supply a provincially certified translation. We also translate public health leaflets, school letters and service information into Amharic for community audiences.

Amharic transcription and origin analysis

Police interviews, recorded calls, focus groups and video evidence in Amharic are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with code-switching into Tigrinya, Oromo or English clearly marked. For asylum casework, SILA Linguists® also arranges language analysis to establish origin (LADO) and nationality assessment.

Where our Amharic linguists work

Our vetted, trained and qualified Amharic linguists can support immigration and asylum services, solicitors and barristers, police, courts, NHS maternity and mental health teams, schools, housing providers, charities and employers. A single project team manages your requests, and all work is covered by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Amharic interpreters can support US immigration courts and attorneys, Canadian refugee hearings, hospitals and schools, as well as UK services.

Good to know

Working with Amharic

Interpreting

  • Many people from Ethiopia who are not Amhara, including Oromo, Tigrayan, Sidama or Wolaytta speakers, use Amharic as a second language. Before booking, check whether Amharic is actually the client's strongest language; in sensitive legal or health matters a first-language interpreter may be more appropriate.
  • Some Eritrean clients also understand Amharic, but Tigrinya is usually their preferred language. Avoid assuming that Amharic will serve all clients from the Horn of Africa.
  • Ethiopian political and ethnic tensions can affect trust. Clients may have a preference about an interpreter's background, and interpreters are expected to remain strictly impartial and to declare any conflict of interest.
  • Politeness is marked grammatically, with respectful pronouns and verb forms for elders and people in authority. Experienced interpreters carry the appropriate register into English and back.
  • Amharic interpreting is available face to face, by telephone (24 hours a day, 365 days a year) and by video, including for conferences and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Translation

  • Translation into Amharic requires fonts with full Ethiopic Unicode support, and layouts must allow for the script's height and character width. Proofreading should be done on the final typeset file, since character substitution errors are common when fonts fall back.
  • Ethiopian documents often use the Ethiopian calendar, which runs about seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar and has thirteen months. Certified translations of birth, marriage, education and court documents should give both dates or clearly convert them.
  • Personal names follow a given name plus father's name pattern rather than a family surname. Translators should keep the original order and spelling consistent across all documents in a case file.
  • We provide certified Amharic translation accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies, plus transcription and subtitling. For documents going to authorities in the United States or Canada, we arrange the certification those authorities require. For US immigration authorities that is a translator's certificate of accuracy, and for Canadian authorities a translator certified by a provincial association.
