Xaasongaxango
kaoKhassonke (Xaasongaxango, also written Khassonké or Kasonke) is a Manding language of the Mande family. It is spoken in western Mali in the area of the historic Khasso kingdom along the Senegal River, around Kayes, Bafoulabé and Kéniéba, with smaller communities across the border in eastern Senegal. Mali counts it among its recognised national languages.
Within Manding, Khassonke is closest to Mandinka of Senegal and The Gambia, and shares much vocabulary with Bambara and Malinke, although it is a distinct language. The Kayes region is highly multilingual: many Khassonke speakers also use Bambara, Mali's main lingua franca, as well as French, Soninke or Fula. The region also has a long history of migration to France and other European countries.

Khassonke, or Xaasongaxango, is the Manding language of the old Khasso kingdom on the Senegal River, spoken around Kayes, Bafoulabé and Kéniéba in western Mali and in neighbouring eastern Senegal. SILA Linguists® arranges Khassonke interpreters and transcribers, and certified French translators, for solicitors, asylum caseworkers, health services and housing teams in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. The Kayes region is intensely multilingual and has a long history of migration to Europe, so we confirm each client's village and preferred language first.
Khassonke is close to Mandinka and shares much with Bambara and Malinke, yet it remains a distinct language. Many speakers also use Bambara, French, Soninke or Fula, but in asylum interviews, legal advice and mental health appointments a first-language Khassonke interpreter captures details that a second language can blur. Relay through French or Bambara can be arranged on request where no direct interpreter is available, although direct interpreting is always our first aim.
We provide face-to-face interpreting for Home Office interviews, tribunals, GP and hospital appointments, social services and housing meetings, telephone interpreting around the clock every day of the year, and video interpreting, which lets the interpreter see gestures and any documents the client brings. A male or female interpreter can be requested.
Malian civil records, identity cards, court papers and school certificates are issued in French, so certified French to English translation is usually needed. We certify it with a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and colleges, and by employers. Names and dates of birth on Malian documents are often recorded in French spelling, and we reproduce them exactly as they appear on the passport.
Khassonke is written in the Latin alphabet under Mali's national orthography, but everyday literacy in it is limited. For information sheets, consent explanations and community outreach, recorded audio messages in Khassonke often reach people more effectively than printed leaflets, and we can produce both.
Khassonke audio, such as recorded interviews, voicemails or messages sent from relatives in Kayes, is transcribed with time codes and an English rendering, with Bambara and French passages flagged. For asylum claims that turn on origin in western Mali or eastern Senegal, SILA Linguists® can commission a LADO report from specialist analysts.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Khassonke linguists can support immigration and asylum solicitors, courts, NHS services, local authority housing and social care teams, and community outreach projects for West African families. One project team handles every booking, with vetted linguists working under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.
