Yemeni Arabic interpreting and translation

Yemeni Arabic is not a single dialect but a group of varieties, including Sanaani, Taizzi-Adeni, Hadrami and Tihami Arabic. We match interpreters to the person's region.

Yemen has some of the most varied Arabic in the Peninsula. Several distinct varieties are recognised: Sanaani Arabic, spoken in the northern highlands around Sana'a; Taizzi-Adeni Arabic, spoken around Taiz and Aden in the south-west; and Hadrami Arabic, spoken in Hadramawt in the east. The Tihama coastal plain along the Red Sea has its own varieties as well. These differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

Yemen is also home to Modern South Arabian languages, such as Mehri and Soqotri, which are separate Semitic languages and not forms of Arabic. Some Yemenis from Mahra or Socotra speak these as their first language.

Yemeni communities live across the Gulf, the Horn of Africa, the UK, Europe and the United States, some of them long established.

  • Main areas: Yemen
  • Also used: Djibouti, Saudi Arabia (Jazan, 'Asir, Najran)

Communities abroad are not shown. Point to an area to see its name.

How we help

Yemeni Arabic services

SILA Linguists®

Yemeni Arabic interpreters and translators with SILA Linguists®

Yemen has some of the most varied Arabic in the Peninsula: Sanaani in the northern highlands, Taizzi-Adeni around Taiz and Aden, Hadrami in Hadramawt, and the distinctive speech of the Tihama coast. Yemeni communities live across the Gulf, the Horn of Africa and the United States, and some British Yemeni communities have been established for generations. SILA Linguists® provides Yemeni Arabic interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum caseworkers, GP practices, courts and family support teams wherever they are based, from Sheffield and Birmingham to New York, Berlin and Sydney, and we ask which part of Yemen the person comes from.

Yemeni Arabic interpreting matched by region

A northern Yemeni and a Hadrami speaker can communicate, but we match the region for legal and medical detail. Saudi or Gulf interpreters may understand some Yemeni varieties, yet a Yemeni interpreter is preferable. Some people from Mahra or Socotra speak Mehri or Soqotri, which are separate Modern South Arabian languages, so we check the first language before booking.

Our Yemeni Arabic interpreters attend asylum interviews, tribunal hearings, solicitors' offices, GP and hospital appointments, children's services meetings and community sessions, and they can also join remotely: by phone at any hour, or by video on the SILA Linguists® app. Yemeni women frequently ask for a female interpreter at maternity and gynaecology appointments, and we arrange that routinely.

Yemeni documents and certified translation

Yemeni official documents are in Modern Standard Arabic, and issuing authorities and formats have varied over time and by region. Our translators know these variations and render stamps, seals and annotations carefully. Yemeni names may be transliterated in several ways, so we follow the spelling used in passports and existing records.

We translate birth and marriage certificates, family records, ID cards, school certificates and court documents, and certify them with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, educational institutions and international bodies. Yemeni documents for American immigration come with a translator's signed certificate of accuracy. Into Arabic, we produce health, housing and family service information, written in clear Modern Standard Arabic that Yemeni readers of all ages find easy to follow, and we can add recorded audio for those who prefer listening.

Transcription and LADO for Yemeni speakers

Recorded interviews, calls and voice messages in Yemeni Arabic are transcribed with timings and rendered into English, with any Mehri, Somali or English labelled. Where origin or nationality is challenged, SILA Linguists® arranges LADO and nationality assessment by analysts familiar with Yemen's regional varieties.

Translation

  • Yemeni official documents are in Modern Standard Arabic. Issuing authorities and document formats have varied over time and by region.
