Punjabi interpreting and translation

Punjabi is spoken on both sides of the India-Pakistan border and by very large communities in the UK and Canada. We provide Punjabi interpreters and translators, matched by script (Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi) and regional dialect.

Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language and, counting both countries, one of the most spoken languages in South Asia. In Pakistan it is the most widely spoken first language, although Urdu and English are the languages of government and education. In India it is the official language of the state of Punjab and a scheduled language. Eastern and Western Punjabi are often distinguished, a grouping that partly reflects the border and the scripts used.

Punjabi has many dialects, including Majhi, the basis of the standard on both sides, Doabi, Malwai and Puadhi in India and Pothwari, Jhangochi and Shahpuri in Pakistan. Pothwari and Mirpuri, spoken by many British Pakistani families with roots in Mirpur in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Azad Jammu and Kashmir), are related varieties. Some describe them as Punjabi dialects and others as part of a separate Pahari-Pothwari language.

How we help

Punjabi services

SILA Linguists®

Punjabi interpreting and translation in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi with SILA Linguists®

Punjabi is widely needed by courts, police stations, GP surgeries and schools in Britain, and it is just as important for public services in Canada, the United States, Australia and the Gulf. SILA Linguists® provides Punjabi interpreters, translators and transcribers for all of them. A Sikh client from Indian Punjab, a family from Lahore and a British Pakistani household with roots in Mirpur may use quite different vocabulary, greetings and religious terms, so we ask whether the client is from India or Pakistan, and which area, every time.

Punjabi interpreting across courts, clinics and classrooms

Punjabi interpreters are plentiful, so face-to-face interpreting can usually be arranged quickly for police interviews, magistrates' and crown courts, solicitors' offices, GP and hospital appointments, safeguarding meetings, social care assessments and parents' evenings. Our telephone interpreting service runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting is available on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform.

Many British Pakistani families speak Mirpuri or Pothwari at home. If that applies, tell us and we will send an interpreter who speaks it rather than standard Punjabi or Urdu. Dialects such as Majhi, Doabi, Malwai and Puadhi in India, or Jhangochi and Shahpuri in Pakistan, are matched in the same way. Requests for a female or male interpreter are common in healthcare and family matters and are accommodated wherever possible. Gurdwara, mosque and community events can be covered by consecutive or simultaneous interpreters.

Punjabi translation in two scripts

Punjabi has two scripts. Gurmukhi, written left to right, is used in India and by Sikh communities worldwide; Shahmukhi, an Arabic-based script written right to left, is used in Pakistan. Readers of one often cannot read the other, so tell us your audience and we will produce public information, letters, leaflets and consent forms in the right script, or in both.

Official documents in Pakistan are mostly in Urdu or English, and in Indian Punjab in Gurmukhi Punjabi or English. We translate birth and marriage certificates, court papers, land records, affidavits and witness statements, and supply certified Punjabi translation with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi documents for the United States, Canada or Australia can be certified by a provincially certified Canadian translator, with a US certificate of accuracy, or through NAATI in Australia.

Punjabi transcription

Police interview recordings, phone downloads, voice notes and recorded evidence often arrive in Punjabi mixed with Urdu, Hindi and English. We transcribe them with time stamps, translate into English and mark each language change clearly.

Sectors we support in Punjabi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Punjabi linguists can support courts, police forces, prosecutors and defence solicitors, immigration advisers, NHS services, children's and adult social care, schools, housing providers and faith and community organisations. You deal with one project team, every linguist is vetted and bound by confidentiality agreements, and data is handled in line with UK GDPR. Punjabi interpreters can work with Canadian courts and refugee proceedings, US immigration courts and attorneys, and Australian hospitals and councils.

Good to know

Working with Punjabi

Interpreting

  • Ask whether the client is from India or Pakistan, and which area. A Sikh client from Indian Punjab and a client from Mirpur or Lahore may use quite different vocabulary, and forms of greeting and religious terms differ as well.
  • Many British Pakistani families speak Mirpuri or Pothwari at home. Tell us if this applies so we can find an interpreter who speaks it rather than standard Punjabi or Urdu.
  • Gender preference may be important in healthcare and family matters; we accommodate requests for a male or female interpreter where possible.
  • Punjabi interpreters are widely available for face-to-face, video and telephone work, including in courts and police stations.

Translation

  • Punjabi is written in two scripts. Gurmukhi, written left to right, is used in India and by Sikh communities worldwide. Shahmukhi, an Arabic-based script written right to left, is used in Pakistan. A Gurmukhi reader may not read Shahmukhi and vice versa, so please tell us your audience.
  • Most official documents in Pakistan are in Urdu or English, and in Indian Punjab in Punjabi (Gurmukhi) or English. We translate certificates, court papers, land records and affidavits for certified use, and produce public information in either script.
