Twi interpreting and translation

Twi is one of the main forms of Akan, the most widely spoken language in Ghana. It is used daily by millions of Ghanaians at home and abroad, including large communities in the UK, Europe and North America.

Akan is usually described as a group of closely related, mutually intelligible varieties. The two best known Twi varieties are Asante (Ashanti) Twi, centred on Kumasi, and Akuapem Twi, from the hills north of Accra. Fante, spoken along the central coast, is another major Akan variety; it is closely related but is often treated separately from Twi.

Asante Twi is very widely spoken and is often used as a common language by Ghanaians from other language backgrounds, especially in cities and markets. Akuapem Twi has a long written tradition, including some of the earliest Bible translations in the region, and its spelling influenced the written standard for Akan.

English is Ghana's official language, and many Twi speakers are comfortable in both. Even so, people tend to switch into Twi for personal and emotional matters, and older speakers may prefer to use Twi throughout.

How we help

Twi services

SILA Linguists®

Twi interpreters and Twi translation services with SILA Linguists®

Twi is the best-known form of Akan, Ghana's most widely spoken language family, with Asante Twi centred on Kumasi and Akuapem Twi from the hills north of Accra; Fante, spoken along the central coast, is a close relative. Asante Twi is often the common language of Ghanaian cities and markets. SILA Linguists® provides Twi interpreters, translators and transcribers to GPs, hospitals, courts, solicitors, schools, social care, media producers and businesses trading with Ghana, across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Twi interpreting with the right variety and register

When you book, tell us whether your client speaks Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi or Fante if you know it. Speakers usually understand one another, but a matched variety makes the conversation more natural. Code-switching between Twi and English is common, and our interpreters render meaning faithfully and confirm which language the client wants for the record. Proverbs and indirect speech are valued in Akan culture, and respectful address towards elders is expected, so our interpreters keep the courtesy while making the substance plain.

We interpret at GP surgeries, hospitals and maternity units, police stations, courts and solicitors' offices, immigration and family law hearings, schools and social care meetings. Sessions can be in person, by telephone at any time of the day or night, or by video in the SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses. Business meetings, trade delegations and church conferences can be covered with consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting, and a female interpreter can be requested for maternity care.

Twi translation, marketing and certification

Written Twi uses two extra letters, ɛ and ɔ, which must display correctly in fonts, forms and databases, because replacing them with e and o can change meaning. We translate health information, community notices, school letters and witness statements, and tell you whether a text suits Asante or Akuapem readers or works as general Akan.

For brands and agencies targeting Ghanaian audiences we translate and adapt marketing copy, websites and social media content. Most Ghanaian official documents are in English, but any Twi document can be certified with our signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by recruiters, the Home Office and other UK authorities. Ghanaian papers for North American offices can be certified with a US certificate of accuracy or by a Canadian provincially certified translator.

Twi transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Twi interviews, voice notes and media with time codes and translate them into English, and create Twi or English subtitles for films, adverts and online video aimed at Ghanaian viewers.

Sectors we support in Twi

Our vetted, trained and qualified Twi linguists can support NHS and maternity services, courts, police and solicitors, immigration and family law practitioners, schools and social care, media companies and businesses trading with Ghana. SILA Linguists® keeps every project with one team, vets each linguist and safeguards your information under NDAs and UK GDPR. Twi interpreting is available for US and Canadian immigration hearings, hospitals and schools as well as UK courts and services.

Good to know

Working with Twi

Interpreting

  • When booking, specify Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi or Fante if you know it. Speakers usually understand each other, but matching the variety makes the conversation more natural and reduces the risk of misunderstandings.
  • Code-switching between Twi and English is common in everyday speech. A good interpreter will render the meaning faithfully and, if the client switches language, check which language they wish to use for the record.
  • Proverbs and indirect speech are valued in Akan culture, and respectful forms of address are expected towards elders. An interpreter who understands these conventions can convey tone as well as words.
  • Twi interpreting is available face to face and by video, and by telephone 24 hours a day.

Translation

  • Twi is written in the Latin alphabet with two additional letters, ɛ and ɔ. These must display correctly in fonts, forms and databases; replacing them with e and o can change meaning. Tone is not normally marked in writing.
  • Most official documents from Ghana are issued in English, so certified translation from Ghana usually involves English. Twi translation is more often needed for health information, community notices, subtitles, marketing and recorded interviews. Tell us whether readers are Asante or Akuapem speakers, or whether a general Akan text is preferred.
