Sebat Bet Gurage is a group of closely related Ethio-Semitic varieties spoken in the Gurage Zone of south-central Ethiopia. Its name means 'Seven Houses' Gurage.
Sebat Bet Gurage
sgwThe Gurage languages are a set of Semitic languages spoken south-west of Addis Ababa. They do not form one uniform language: East Gurage (Silt'e and related varieties) and Kistane (Soddo) are quite distinct from the western group known as Sebat Bet. Sebat Bet Gurage varieties include Chaha, Ezha, Gumer, Muher, Mesqan, Geta and Inor. Chaha is the best known and is often used as a reference point.
Sebat Bet Gurage is written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script, the same syllabary used for Amharic. The varieties are known for features such as widespread labialisation and palatalisation of consonants, which make them sound quite different from Amharic despite their shared Semitic origin. Many Gurage people live and work in Addis Ababa and other cities, and most are bilingual in Amharic.

Sebat Bet Gurage is the western group of the Gurage languages spoken south-west of Addis Ababa, with varieties such as Chaha, Ezha, Gumer, Muher, Mesqan, Geta and Inor. It is quite distinct from East Gurage (Silt'e) and Kistane, so the label 'Gurage' alone is never enough to book an interpreter. SILA Linguists® supplies Sebat Bet Gurage interpreters, translators and transcribers for immigration, healthcare, business and research work in the UK, across North America, in Australia and New Zealand and beyond, confirming the exact variety first.
Speakers of different Sebat Bet varieties usually understand each other reasonably well, but Silt'e or Kistane speakers may not, so we confirm whether your client speaks a Sebat Bet variety and which one. Many Gurage clients who grew up or worked in towns are comfortable in Amharic, and an Amharic interpreter is sometimes a sensible choice. Where the client prefers Gurage, or where nuance matters, as in an asylum interview or a family dispute, we book a Sebat Bet interpreter.
Gurage communities are well known in Ethiopian commerce, and we also interpret business and family matters such as property, inheritance and trading arrangements. Interpreters can attend in person or join by phone at any hour on any day, and video sessions take place in our SILA Linguists® app or a secure platform of your choice. Healthcare appointments can be staffed with a female or male interpreter on request.
Sebat Bet Gurage is written in the Ethiopic script, but some Gurage sounds need extra letter forms beyond those used for Amharic, so we use fonts with full Ethiopic Unicode support and have a speaker check the typesetting. Typical translation work includes personal statements, family letters, health information and research materials, translated into or out of Gurage.
Ethiopian civil documents for Gurage speakers are normally issued in Amharic, so certified translation usually starts there. We convert Ethiopian calendar dates where needed, keep names in the given name plus father's name pattern, and certify the result with a signed statement that the translation is accurate, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers.
The Sebat Bet varieties are known for unusual sound changes and have long interested linguists. We transcribe research recordings, interviews and audio evidence with timestamps and a parallel English text, labelling the variety and any Amharic. For asylum claims, our analysts can carry out language analysis to determine origin (LADO).
Our vetted, trained and qualified Gurage linguists can support immigration and asylum services, NHS and private healthcare, businesses and family law practitioners, and universities. SILA Linguists® gives you a single project contact, interpreters we have vetted ourselves and confidentiality guaranteed through NDAs and UK GDPR.
