Southern Ndebele interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Southern Ndebele is one of the official languages of South Africa, spoken mainly in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. We provide Southern Ndebele interpreters and translators for legal, healthcare and immigration work.
isiNdebele
nblSouthern Ndebele (isiNdebele) is a Nguni Bantu language related to Zulu, Xhosa and Swati. It is often called Southern Transvaal Ndebele, after the former Transvaal province. Although it shares its name with Northern Ndebele of Zimbabwe, the two are separate languages with different histories: Northern Ndebele is very close to Zulu, while Southern Ndebele has its own vocabulary and some influence from neighbouring Sotho languages.
It is one of the smaller official languages of South Africa. Most speakers are multilingual and also use Zulu, Sepedi, Afrikaans or English. Ndebele communities are also known for their distinctive painted house designs and beadwork.
A separate group sometimes called Northern Transvaal Ndebele (Sumayela) lives in Limpopo and speaks a variety strongly influenced by Sepedi. It is not the official isiNdebele standard.

Southern Ndebele is one of South Africa's official languages, spoken mainly in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo, and SILA Linguists® provides isiNdebele interpreters and translators to clients in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Because Ndebele also names a separate language in Zimbabwe, our first check is whether your client is South African or Zimbabwean. Southern Ndebele has its own vocabulary and some influence from neighbouring Sotho languages, so the distinction matters for accuracy.
South African Ndebele speakers are usually multilingual, using Zulu, Sepedi, Afrikaans or English as well. Some prefer isiNdebele for personal subjects and English or Zulu for official ones, so our interpreters confirm the client's choice at the outset. We support family visa applications, GP and hospital appointments, solicitors' meetings and court proceedings, and university and student services, including enrolment conversations and welfare support for South African students.
Video interpreting using the SILA Linguists® app or the video system your service already has is a practical way to reach a South African linguist quickly, while telephone interpreting is on call day and night, weekends and bank holidays included. Face-to-face interpreters attend hearings and longer assessments, and consecutive or simultaneous interpreting, including RSI, can be arranged for meetings and events. A female or male interpreter is available on request.
Southern Ndebele is written in the Latin alphabet following the South African standard, which differs from both Zulu and Zimbabwean Ndebele spelling, so neither can stand in for it. We translate letters, health information, student guidance and personal statements into isiNdebele, and handwritten letters or messages into English.
Official South African documents, including birth and marriage certificates, matric results and court orders, are generally issued in English or Afrikaans. We provide certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office and the courts, as well as by universities and employers across the UK.
We transcribe isiNdebele audio and video, from interviews and oral history recordings to cultural documentaries, with timestamps plus an English version. Subtitles can be produced for heritage projects, including films about the painted house designs and beadwork for which Ndebele communities are well known, and for research interviews where speakers move between isiNdebele, Zulu and English.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Southern Ndebele linguists can support immigration advisers, healthcare providers, solicitors and courts, universities and student support teams, and cultural and heritage organisations, as well as employers and recruitment teams supporting South African staff and their families. You deal with a single point of contact from booking to delivery, and all our linguists are vetted and bound by signed confidentiality agreements, with data handled under UK GDPR.
