Dholuo belongs to the Luo group of Western Nilotic languages, which also includes Acholi and Lango in Uganda and Alur. It is spoken mainly around Lake Victoria, in Kenya's Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori counties, and in the Mara region of Tanzania. It is one of the largest languages of Kenya.

Two main dialects are usually described: the Trans-Yala dialect spoken around Ugenya, Alego and Yimbo, and the South Nyanza dialect, which is the more widely used form. Speakers understand each other easily.

Dholuo is written in the Latin alphabet and has a substantial body of published material, including Bible translations, newspapers and radio. It is tonal, though tone is not marked in everyday writing.

How we help

Dholuo services

SILA Linguists®

Dholuo (Luo) interpreters, translators and transcription with SILA Linguists®

Dholuo is one of Kenya's largest languages, spoken around Lake Victoria in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori counties and in Tanzania's Mara region. SILA Linguists® supplies Dholuo interpreters, translators and transcribers to healthcare providers, courts, police, immigration and family law practitioners, researchers and community services across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Because 'Luo' can also describe related but distinct languages from Uganda and South Sudan, such as Acholi, we confirm at booking that your client speaks Kenyan Dholuo.

Dholuo interpreting where accuracy counts

Most Kenyan Dholuo speakers also speak Swahili and English, and many manage day-to-day appointments without help. Courts, police interviews, mental health assessments, family proceedings and consultations with older relatives are different: there, a Dholuo interpreter ensures the speaker is fully understood and fully understands. Speakers of the Trans-Yala and South Nyanza dialects understand each other easily, so our focus is on finding the right subject knowledge for your setting.

Short GP or advice appointments are well suited to telephone interpreting, available round the clock on every day of the year, or to video through the SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses. For hearings, longer consultations and home visits we send interpreters in person. Church and community events, academic conferences and business meetings can be covered consecutively or simultaneously, including remote simultaneous interpreting.

Translating Dholuo texts and certified translation

Dholuo has a substantial published tradition, from Bible translations to newspapers and radio, but spelling varies between publishers, so we agree conventions before work starts. Kinship terms and funeral customs often have no direct English equivalent, and our translators add short explanatory notes where a court or caseworker needs the cultural meaning. Typical work includes witness statements, letters, text messages used as evidence, health materials and community information.

Kenyan civil and academic records are normally in English, but any Dholuo document submitted to a UK authority can be provided as a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy. UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities accept it, as do employers.

Dholuo transcription for research and evidence

Dholuo is a frequent language in health and social research around Lake Victoria. We transcribe interviews, focus groups and recorded evidence with time stamps and translate them into English, noting switches into Swahili or English, and we can subtitle short films and awareness videos.

Sectors we support in Dholuo

Our vetted, trained and qualified Dholuo linguists can support NHS and private healthcare, courts, police, solicitors handling immigration and family cases, universities and research institutes, and community organisations. SILA Linguists® keeps your work with one project team and applies confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR throughout.

Good to know

Working with Dholuo

Interpreting

  • Most Kenyan Dholuo speakers also speak Swahili and English. Interpreting is still important in legal and clinical contexts, and for older relatives and people more at ease in their first language.
  • Dholuo should not be confused with Luo languages spoken in Uganda or South Sudan, such as Acholi. Although related, they are different languages, so the label 'Luo' alone needs clarifying when booking.
  • Telephone and video interpreting are good options for short appointments; face-to-face interpreting can be arranged for hearings and longer consultations.

Translation

  • Agree spelling conventions in advance, since Dholuo spelling varies between publishers. Untranslatable cultural terms, such as kinship and funeral customs, may need explanatory notes.
  • Kenyan civil and academic documents are issued in English, so Dholuo translation is mostly for community information, health materials, witness statements and transcripts. Certified translations are accepted by UK authorities including the Home Office, the courts and universities, and by international bodies.
