Safwa is a Bantu language of the Mbeya highlands in south-western Tanzania, spoken by the Safwa people.
Safwa (Kisafwa)
sbkSafwa is spoken in Mbeya Region, in the highlands north and west of Mbeya city. Several dialects are recorded, including Guruka, Mbwila, Poroto and Songwe. The language is known under a number of names, depending on the prefix used: Ishisafwa or Cisafwa in the language itself and Kisafwa in Swahili.
Safwa belongs to a group of Bantu languages in the Mbeya corridor that also includes languages such as Malila and Lambya. Like most Tanzanian community languages, it is used mainly in speech, while Swahili serves for education, administration and inter-ethnic communication. Safwa is written in the Latin alphabet, with materials produced mainly by churches and literacy projects.

Safwa is spoken in the highlands north and west of Mbeya city in south-western Tanzania, in dialects recorded as Guruka, Mbwila, Poroto and Songwe. Its speakers call it Ishisafwa or Cisafwa, while Swahili speakers say Kisafwa. Like its Mbeya corridor neighbours Malila and Lambya, it lives mainly in speech. SILA Linguists® helps asylum and immigration teams, health services, family support workers and documentation projects in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand reach Safwa speakers in whichever language serves them best.
Nearly every Safwa speaker also speaks Swahili, and for routine matters a Swahili interpreter may be perfectly acceptable to the client. We confirm that rather than assume it, particularly for older people and those with limited schooling, who may only open up fully in Safwa. Dialect differences are modest, but we still ask which part of Mbeya the client comes from.
For a language with very few speakers outside Tanzania, remote work is the realistic choice. A Safwa or Swahili interpreter can join by telephone at any time of day, including nights and weekends, or appear on screen in our app or in whatever video software your team prefers. Relay through Swahili is available when the client wants it. Typical settings include Home Office interviews, GP and hospital consultations, family support meetings and children's services, and clients who would rather talk to a woman or to a man can tell us so when booking.
Safwa uses ordinary Latin letters, so no special fonts are needed, but written materials are limited. When we translate health advice, family support information or a personal statement into Safwa, terminology for medicine, law and administration is often borrowed from Swahili or explained in plain words, and we note those choices for your records.
Official papers for Safwa speakers, such as birth certificates and school results, are issued in Swahili or English. Our certified Swahili translations carry a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as immigration officials, courts and colleges, and by employers.
Language documentation projects and community researchers often hold hours of Safwa audio. Our transcribers produce time-coded transcripts, mark Swahili passages, and add an English translation so the material can be archived or analysed. Where an asylum decision depends on whether someone really grew up in the Mbeya highlands, SILA Linguists® can commission a LADO report, our language analysis service for questions of origin.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Safwa and Swahili linguists can support immigration and asylum advisers, NHS and community health services, family and children's services, and university documentation projects. Each request is handled by a named coordinator, our interpreters are checked before they work for you, and every conversation and file stays confidential under signed NDAs and UK GDPR.
