Face-to-face interpreters, in the room when it matters
An interpreter who attends in person can follow tone, body language and the dynamics between people, not just the words. We send certified, carefully vetted interpreters to your location, matched to your language and your sector.
Some conversations are hard to hold through a screen or a phone line. A solicitor taking instructions from a vulnerable client, a consultant explaining a diagnosis, a negotiation where trust is still being built: in each case the people involved benefit from an interpreter who is physically present, who can see who is speaking, notice hesitation or distress and ask for clarification straight away.
SILA Linguists provides face-to-face interpreters for legal, medical, public sector, business and technical settings in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. We cover assignments in major cities and in more remote locations, drawing on over 6,500 trained, vetted and qualified interpreters and translators working in more than 350 languages and dialects.
Our interpreters work to a professional code of impartiality, accuracy and confidentiality. They interpret everything that is said, do not add their own opinions and treat all information as confidential, with NDAs available for sensitive work.
Why choose SILA Linguists for face-to-face
Matched to your sector
We select an interpreter who knows the terminology and conventions of your setting, whether that is a police interview, an outpatient clinic or a factory floor.
Non-verbal cues captured
Being in the room lets the interpreter follow facial expressions, gestures and turn-taking, which helps in emotional, complex or multi-party conversations.
Consecutive and whispered modes
Most appointments use consecutive interpreting, where the speaker pauses for the interpreter. For one or two listeners, such as a defendant or witness in a court hearing, the interpreter can whisper simultaneously (chuchotage), and we provide portable interpreting equipment when more people need to listen.
Immediate clarification
If a term or answer is unclear, the interpreter can raise it on the spot, so misunderstandings are dealt with before they affect the outcome.
Wide geographic reach
Interpreters are booked close to your venue where possible, from city centres to rural clinics and remote sites.
Confidential and GDPR compliant
Booking details and anything said during the assignment are handled under GDPR, with NDAs signed where you need them.
Face-to-face interpreting from SILA Linguists® across every sector
When you book an on-site interpreter with SILA Linguists®, you are booking a professional who already knows the setting they are walking into. Our face-to-face interpreters attend solicitor consultations and court hearings for legal teams, clinics, wards and mental health assessments for healthcare providers, interviews under caution for police and justice services, and housing, safeguarding and social care meetings for councils and public bodies. For engineering and energy projects they attend site inspections, audits and toolbox talks, where the interpreter needs both the vocabulary and the safety awareness of the shop floor. Our face-to-face interpreters are also trained for advice and counselling sessions run by charities supporting refugees and survivors of abuse.
We match each assignment by language, dialect and subject knowledge, and a female or male interpreter can be requested where culture, religion or the subject matter makes it important. Consecutive interpreting is the usual mode, with whispered simultaneous interpreting for a defendant or a small group. Our network covers more than 350 languages and dialects, from Polish, Romanian and Arabic to Kurdish Sorani, Tigrinya and Farsi, with interpreters attending in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
Face-to-face interpreting rarely stands alone. SILA Linguists® can follow an appointment with certified translation of the letters, statements or medical reports discussed in it, transcription of recorded interviews, and, for asylum and nationality questions, language analysis by specialist analysts. When attendance is not possible, the same linguists can often join by video remote interpreting or by telephone, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every interpreter works under a confidentiality agreement and UK GDPR, and one project team looks after your booking from the first call to the final timesheet.
Step by step

The interpreter arrives in good time, introduces their role to all parties and interprets the session in full.
Follow-up
If the appointment runs over, needs a return visit or raises further language needs, we arrange continuity, ideally with the same interpreter.
Frequently asked questions
When should I choose face-to-face rather than video or telephone interpreting?
Choose an on-site interpreter when the conversation is sensitive, emotionally demanding, long or involves several people in one room, or when the person you are speaking with may struggle with technology. For short or urgent calls, telephone or video interpreting is often more practical.
Can I request an interpreter of a particular gender?
Yes. Tell us your preference when you book and we will assign an interpreter of the requested gender. This is often important in medical, legal and community settings.
How should I brief the interpreter?
Share any documents, names, technical terms or background in advance where you can. A short briefing helps the interpreter prepare terminology and understand the context.
Do you cover locations outside the UK?
Yes. We arrange face-to-face interpreters in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and other regions, using interpreters based locally to the assignment. Tell us the location when you book.
Tell us the language, the format and the date
Our bookings team will confirm the details with you and arrange the right linguist. Have the language (and dialect, if you know it), the type of assignment and the date ready.
