Soninke interpreting and translation

Soninke is a West African language spoken along the upper Senegal river in Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia, and by large communities in France and the UK. We provide Soninke interpreters and translators, including for speakers who call their language Serahule or Sarakole.

Soninke is a Mande language, related more distantly to Bambara, Malinke and Mandinka. The Soninke people are associated with the medieval empire of Ghana (Wagadu), and the language has a long history of trade and Islamic scholarship across the Sahel. Today its main areas are the Kayes region of Mali, the Bakel area of Senegal, the Guidimakha region of Mauritania and the Upper River Region of The Gambia, where it is usually called Serahule.

Soninke has several regional varieties, broadly an eastern group in Mali and a western group along the Senegal and Gambia rivers, with differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. Many speakers also speak French, Bambara, Wolof, Hassaniya Arabic, Pulaar or English depending on their country, and there are well-established Soninke communities in the Paris region and in British cities.

  • Main areas: Mali (Kayes)
  • Also used: Gambia, Senegal (Tambacounda, Matam), Mauritania (Guidimaka)

How we help

Soninke services

SILA Linguists®

Soninke (Serahule) interpreters and translation from SILA Linguists®

Soninke is the Mande language of the Kayes region of Mali, the Bakel area of Senegal, Guidimakha in Mauritania and the Upper River Region of The Gambia, where it is called Serahule. SILA Linguists® provides Soninke interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration, health and legal services throughout the UK, and in North America, Australia and New Zealand too. A Gambian Serahule speaker, a Malian from Kayes and a Mauritanian from Selibaby share the language but borrow from English, French, Bambara or Arabic in different ways, so we always ask for the client's country and home area.

Soninke interpreting in sensitive settings

We provide Soninke interpreters for asylum and immigration interviews, maternity and hospital appointments, family and criminal courts, social services meetings and community information sessions. Face-to-face interpreters attend in person, telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting runs in the SILA Linguists® app, or on any secure platform you prefer.

Many Soninke speakers also use French, Bambara, Wolof, Pulaar, Hassaniya Arabic or English, but detailed evidence and medical consent are best given in the first language. Consecutive interpreting is the usual format, with simultaneous interpreting and RSI available for community events. A preferred interpreter gender can be arranged, which many women value in maternity and family cases.

Translation, scripts and certified documents

Soninke is mostly written in the Latin alphabet, but Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia each have their own conventions, and some speakers write in Arabic script (Ajami) or N'Ko. Since literacy in Soninke varies, we often recommend an audio version of public information alongside French, English or Arabic text.

Civil documents from the region are mainly issued in French, English or Arabic. We provide certified translation from these languages with a signed certificate confirming accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as immigration officials, courts and admissions offices, and by employers, keeping family and place names consistent across the file. Where letters or statements are written in Soninke itself, we translate them directly into English.

Transcription and origin analysis

Our transcribers produce time-stamped Soninke transcripts with English translation for interviews, recorded calls and voice messages, marking switches into French or Bambara. For asylum claims where nationality is questioned, SILA Linguists® can arrange a linguistic origin assessment, known as LADO, which can help distinguish speakers from Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia.

Sectors we support in Soninke

Our vetted, trained and qualified Soninke linguists can support immigration advisers, the courts, criminal defence solicitors, NHS maternity services, local authority social workers and community organisations supporting West African families, as well as schools and housing teams working with Soninke-speaking families from Mali, Senegal and The Gambia. A named project manager manages every request, and our vetted linguists work under non-disclosure agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Soninke

Interpreting

  • Tell us the client's country and home area. A Gambian Serahule speaker, a Malian speaker from Kayes and a Mauritanian speaker from Selibaby share the language but use different loanwords from English, French, Bambara or Arabic. Matching the variety improves accuracy in asylum interviews, family matters and medical consultations. A preferred interpreter gender is available on request.

Translation

  • Soninke is written in the Latin alphabet, but Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia have each developed their own orthographic conventions, and some speakers write in Arabic script (Ajami) or N'Ko. Literacy in Soninke varies, so for public information we often recommend audio alongside French, English or Arabic text. Official documents from these countries are mainly in French, English or Arabic, and certified translation from those languages is available.
