SILA Linguists® is a registered trade mark of NEXUS of SILA Limited.
This Cookie Policy explains how NEXUS of SILA Limited, trading as SILA Linguists® ('we', 'us', or 'our'), uses cookies and similar technologies on its website (the 'Site'). It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.
We follow the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and, for visitors in the European Economic Area, the ePrivacy Directive and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In short: we only use storage that is strictly necessary for the Site to work without asking you, and we only use analytics cookies if you agree.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your computer, phone or tablet when you visit it. They let the website recognise your device and remember information about your visit. Websites can also store information in your browser using similar technologies, such as local storage. In this policy, 'cookies' includes these similar technologies.
Cookies set by the website you are visiting are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by another organisation's service used on that website are called third-party cookies. Some cookies are deleted when you close your browser (session cookies); others stay on your device until they expire or you delete them (persistent cookies).
2. Which cookies do we use?
We use two kinds of cookies and similar technologies:
- Strictly necessary storage, which remembers your cookie choice. The law allows us to use it without your consent, because the Site cannot respect your choice without it.
- Analytics cookies from Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity, which help us understand how visitors use the Site so that we can improve it. These are only set if you give your consent.
We do not use advertising, marketing, retargeting or social media tracking cookies, and we do not sell your personal information.
Videos on the Site are provided by YouTube and only load when you click play (see section 5).
3. Strictly necessary storage
When you make a choice in our cookie banner, we save it in your browser so that we do not ask you again on every page and so that analytics are only loaded if you have agreed. We store your choice in your browser's local storage under the key sila-consent and/or in a first-party cookie named sila_consent. It contains only your choice and the date you made it, not your name or any other information that identifies you, and it is not sent to any third party.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
sila-consent |
SILA Linguists (this Site) | Stores your cookie choice | 12 months | First-party local storage |
sila_consent |
SILA Linguists (this Site) | Stores your cookie choice | 12 months | First-party cookie |
After 12 months we will ask you again.
4. Analytics cookies (only with your consent)
If you click to accept analytics cookies, we load Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity. Until you accept, and if you refuse, these tools are not loaded and no analytics cookies are set. Our legal basis for using analytics cookies, and for the related processing of your personal information, is your consent.
We use Google Consent Mode v2. By default, every consent type is set to 'denied'. If you accept analytics cookies, only analytics storage is set to 'granted'; the advertising consent types (ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization) always remain 'denied', because we do not use advertising cookies.
Google Analytics 4
Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-8PT16H1KW5) tells us, in aggregate, how visitors find and use the Site: for example, which pages are visited, how long visits last, which links are clicked, and the visitor's approximate region, device type and browser. It is provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, and its parent company Google LLC (United States). Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services in its own privacy materials.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Distinguishes one visitor from another by a random identifier | Up to 2 years | First-party cookie | |
_ga_<container-id> (on this Site: _ga_8PT16H1KW5) |
Keeps track of the current visit (session state) | Up to 2 years | First-party cookie |
Google also offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on all websites; you can find it by searching for 'Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on'.
Microsoft Clarity
Microsoft Clarity (project ID oho7jcynsw) shows us how visitors interact with our pages, for example where they click, how far they scroll and where they have difficulty, using heatmaps and session replays. Clarity masks text that you type into forms, so that it is not sent to Microsoft. Clarity is provided by Microsoft. Microsoft explains how it uses this information in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_clck |
Microsoft | Keeps the Clarity user identifier and preferences for this Site, so that visits by the same browser are linked | 1 year | First-party cookie |
_clsk |
Microsoft | Connects several page views by the same visitor into a single session recording | 1 day | First-party cookie |
MUID |
Microsoft | Identifies unique web browsers visiting Microsoft sites; used by Microsoft for site analytics and other operational purposes | About 1 year | Third-party cookie |
CLID |
Microsoft | Records the first time Clarity saw this browser on any website using Clarity | 1 year | Third-party cookie |
ANONCHK, MR, SM |
Microsoft | Technical cookies that support the MUID cookie (for example, whether to refresh it or synchronise it across Microsoft domains). Clarity does not use Microsoft's advertising identifier. | From the end of the browsing session up to 7 days | Third-party cookies |
Transfers outside the UK and EEA
Google and Microsoft may process analytics data in the United States and other countries. Where they do, the transfer is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK Extension (under which Google LLC and Microsoft Corporation are certified) or by other safeguards recognised by UK and EU law, such as standard contractual clauses.
5. Embedded videos (YouTube)
Some pages show videos hosted on YouTube, a service of Google. When the page loads, we show only a preview image stored on our own Site, and nothing is loaded from YouTube. The video is only loaded when you click play. It is then loaded from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.
Once you click play, YouTube (Google) may set cookies or use similar technologies on your device, and may collect information about your viewing, under Google's own privacy policy. If you do not want this, do not play the video.
6. How to give, refuse or withdraw consent
When you first visit the Site, a cookie banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. You can accept or reject them with one click; rejecting is as easy as accepting, and the Site works in the same way whichever you choose.
You can change your mind at any time. Click the 'Cookie settings' link in the footer of any page to reopen the banner and change your choice. If you withdraw your consent, we stop loading Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity from that moment and remove the first-party analytics cookies that the Site can access (_ga, _ga_8PT16H1KW5, _clck and _clsk). Third-party cookies set on Microsoft's own domains can only be deleted in your browser settings (see section 7). Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing before you withdrew it.
7. How to control cookies in your browser
Most browsers let you see which cookies are stored, delete them, and block cookies from all or some websites. Blocking all cookies may stop parts of some websites from working; on our Site, it means your cookie choice cannot be remembered, so the banner may appear again. Instructions for the most common browsers:
- Google Chrome: open the menu (three dots), choose Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies or Delete browsing data.
- Mozilla Firefox: open the menu (three lines), choose Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Cookies and Site Data.
- Apple Safari (Mac): choose Safari, then Settings (or Preferences), then Privacy, then Manage Website Data. On iPhone and iPad: open the Settings app, choose Safari, then Advanced, then Website Data.
- Microsoft Edge: open the menu (three dots), choose Settings, then Cookies and site permissions (or Privacy, search, and services), then Manage and delete cookies and site data.
On a phone or tablet, see your device's browser settings or help pages.
8. Changes to this Cookie Policy
We will update this Cookie Policy if we change the cookies we use or if the law changes. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated. If we start using a new type of non-essential cookie, we will ask for your consent again.
