Kikuyu is a Bantu language spoken in the highlands around Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range, in counties such as Kiambu, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua, and throughout Nairobi. It is closely related to Embu, Meru and Kamba. There are sizeable Kikuyu-speaking communities in the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere.

Regional varieties include those of Kiambu in the south, Murang'a, Nyeri in the north and the Ndia and Gichugu areas of Kirinyaga. The differences are mostly in accent and some vocabulary, and speakers understand one another without difficulty. The Murang'a and Nyeri forms have historically been influential in writing.

Kikuyu has a substantial literary tradition. The novelist Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o chose to write major works in Gĩkũyũ, and there is daily Kikuyu-language radio and television. The alphabet is Latin-based with two extra vowel letters, ĩ and ũ, which are essential to correct spelling.

Kikuyu services

SILA Linguists®

Kikuyu (Gĩkũyũ) interpreting, translation and transcription by SILA Linguists®

Kikuyu, written Gĩkũyũ, is spoken in the highlands around Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, in Kiambu, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua, throughout Nairobi and in sizeable communities in the UK, the United States and elsewhere. SILA Linguists® provides Kikuyu interpreters, translators and transcribers to courts, solicitors, immigration advisers, hospitals, schools and safeguarding teams across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Regional differences are mostly in accent, so our attention goes to subject expertise and to how your client actually speaks.

Kikuyu interpreters who handle real-life speech

Younger, urban Kikuyu speakers switch freely between Kikuyu, Swahili and English, and Nairobi speech includes Sheng slang. Our interpreters are at ease with this mixing while keeping the record accurate. Older clients from rural areas often use proverbs and indirect expressions, particularly about family, land and conflict, and those carry meaning that must be rendered faithfully. Land, inheritance and family disputes are common subjects in Kikuyu legal matters, and our interpreters know the related vocabulary.

We cover courts and solicitors' meetings, immigration and asylum interviews, hospitals, mental health services and school safeguarding meetings in person, by telephone at any hour of every day, and by video through the SILA Linguists® video app or the software you normally use for calls. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, including remote simultaneous interpreting, are available for church conferences, community events and business meetings.

Kikuyu translation with correct Gĩkũyũ characters

Text that replaces ĩ and ũ with plain i and u, or with other accented letters, is hard to read and can be ambiguous, so we check that every character displays and prints correctly. For public information we ask whether the audience is in Kenya or in the diaspora, since diaspora readers may prefer simpler wording with some English terms retained.

Kenyan civil documents are issued in English, so certified Kikuyu translation most often covers personal statements, letters, messages, recorded evidence and transcripts. Each certified translation includes a statement of accuracy, signed and dated by us, accepted by UK authorities such as the courts and colleges, and by recruiters. Kenyan papers for US immigration come with the translator's certificate of accuracy.

Transcribing Kikuyu audio evidence

Audio evidence is a common reason to need Kikuyu support. We produce time-stamped transcripts with English translation for police interviews, phone recordings, voice notes and research interviews, marking every switch into Swahili, Sheng or English. Where a case involves questions of origin, language analysis to establish origin (LADO) can also be arranged.

Sectors we support in Kikuyu

Our vetted, trained and qualified Kikuyu linguists can support courts and solicitors, immigration and asylum services, hospitals and mental health teams, schools and safeguarding professionals, and businesses with Kenyan partners. SILA Linguists® gives you one accountable team of vetted Kikuyu linguists, and files are protected by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Kikuyu interpreting is available for US immigration courts, attorneys, hospitals and schools, as well as UK services.

Good to know

Working with Kikuyu

Interpreting

  • Many Kikuyu speakers, particularly younger urban people, switch freely between Kikuyu, Swahili and English, and Nairobi speech includes Sheng slang. A good interpreter will be comfortable with this mixing while keeping the record accurate.
  • Older clients from rural areas may use proverbs and indirect expressions, especially when talking about family, land or conflict. These are often central to the meaning and should be rendered faithfully.
  • Land, inheritance and family disputes are frequent subjects in Kikuyu legal matters, and interpreters should be familiar with the related vocabulary.
  • Kikuyu interpreting is widely available by telephone and video as well as in person.

Translation

  • Check that ĩ and ũ display and print correctly. Text that replaces them with i and u, or with other accented letters, is hard to read and can be ambiguous.
  • Kenyan civil documents are issued in English, so certified Kikuyu translation is most often for personal statements, letters, recorded evidence and transcripts.
  • For public information, decide whether the audience is diaspora or in Kenya; diaspora readers may prefer simpler vocabulary with some English terms retained.
