isiZulu is one of the most widely spoken home languages in South Africa and one of its official languages. It is understood well beyond its home region of KwaZulu-Natal.

isiZulu is a Nguni Bantu language, closely related to isiXhosa, siSwati and isiNdebele. Its heartland is KwaZulu-Natal, but it is also widely spoken in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and in cities such as Johannesburg it serves as a common language among people of many backgrounds. Smaller communities of speakers live in neighbouring countries.

Like isiXhosa, isiZulu has click consonants, written c, q and x, which entered the Nguni languages through contact with Khoisan languages. It is a tonal language, although tone is not marked in standard writing.

The language has a strong literary and broadcasting presence, and urban speech, particularly in Gauteng, mixes isiZulu with English and other South African languages. Rural speech in KwaZulu-Natal tends to be more conservative and closer to the written standard.

How we help

Zulu services

SILA Linguists®

isiZulu interpreting, translation and subtitling with SILA Linguists®

isiZulu is one of South Africa's most widely spoken home languages, with its heartland in KwaZulu-Natal and a strong presence in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, where it serves as a common language in Johannesburg and beyond. It has a rich literary and oral tradition. SILA Linguists® provides isiZulu interpreters, translators and transcribers for healthcare and mental health, legal and police proceedings, education and research, and media, marketing and business work across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

isiZulu interpreting for complex conversations

Many isiZulu speakers are comfortable in English, but people usually prefer their first language for sensitive or complex conversations, and interpreting reduces the risk that important details slip away. isiZulu and isiXhosa are related but not interchangeable for detailed communication, so we book the client's own language unless they tell us otherwise. Respect for elders shows in forms of address and in hlonipha, the tradition of respectful avoidance language, and our interpreters recognise the substitute words and render them accurately.

isiZulu interpreting is available in hospitals, clinics and mental health services, police interviews and court proceedings, schools, universities and research projects. You can choose on-site attendance, telephone interpreting at any hour of the day or night, or video through our SILA Linguists® app or a secure platform of your choice. For business communication, investor meetings and conferences, we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreters for multilingual events.

isiZulu translation, localisation and certified documents

isiZulu is written conjunctively, joining grammatical prefixes to word stems, so words are long and text length differs noticeably from English. We allow for that in forms, websites and subtitles. Tone is not marked in standard writing, and the click consonants c, q and x are simply written as letters, so fonts are straightforward. We translate healthcare information, educational content and research materials, and localise websites, apps and advertising for South African consumers.

South African official documents are often in English or bilingual. Where isiZulu text appears, our certified translation carries a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as courts and universities, and by employers. South African papers for authorities in the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their rules, including NAATI-certified translation for Australia.

isiZulu transcription and subtitling

Our isiZulu transcribers are prepared for interviews, drama and documentary footage from media producers, broadcasters and researchers. We deliver time-coded transcripts with English translation and isiZulu or English subtitles, adjusted for the language's longer words and reading speeds. Market research recordings and focus groups are handled in the same way, with speaker labels.

Sectors we support in isiZulu

Our vetted, trained and qualified isiZulu linguists can support healthcare and mental health providers, legal practitioners, police and courts, universities and researchers, media companies, marketing agencies and businesses operating in South Africa. SILA Linguists® provides one dedicated project contact, and your files are protected by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. isiZulu interpreting is also available to courts, hospitals, universities and immigration advisers in the US, Canada and Australia.

Working with Zulu

Interpreting

  • Many isiZulu speakers are also comfortable in English, but people usually prefer their first language for sensitive or complex conversations. Interpreting in isiZulu reduces the risk that important details are lost.
  • Respect for elders is reflected in forms of address and in the hlonipha tradition of respectful avoidance language. Interpreters familiar with these customs recognise respectful substitute words and render them accurately.
  • isiZulu and isiXhosa are related but not interchangeable for detailed communication. Please book the client's own language unless they have agreed otherwise.
  • Interpreting is available face to face, by video and by telephone, and for conference and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Translation

  • isiZulu uses the Latin alphabet without special characters. It is written conjunctively, joining grammatical prefixes to word stems, so words are long and text length differs noticeably from English. This should be allowed for in forms, websites and subtitles.
  • South African official documents are often issued in English or bilingually. We provide certified translation of isiZulu and English documents, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies. We also translate into isiZulu for healthcare, education, marketing and media.
