Tigrinya is the most widely spoken language in Eritrea, where it is used alongside Arabic and English in government and education, and it is the main language of Tigray in Ethiopia. Like Amharic and Tigre, it descends from the same branch of Ethiopian Semitic languages as classical Ge'ez, which is still used in the liturgy of the Orthodox Tewahedo churches.

Speakers from Eritrea and from Tigray understand each other, but there are noticeable differences in accent, vocabulary and idiom. Eritrean Tigrinya includes loanwords from Italian and Arabic, while Tigrayan usage shows more influence from Amharic. Within each country, regional and generational differences add further variation.

Large Tigrinya-speaking communities live in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Israel, North America and Australia, many of them having arrived as refugees. As a result, Tigrinya interpreting is often needed in asylum, healthcare and social care settings.

  • Main areas: Eritrea (Maekel, Debub), Ethiopia (Tigray)
  • Also used: Eritrea (Anseba, Gash-Barka, Northern Red Sea, Southern Red Sea)

How we help

Tigrinya services

SILA Linguists®

Tigrinya interpreting, translation and LADO services by SILA Linguists®

Tigrinya is the most widely spoken language of Eritrea and the main language of Tigray in northern Ethiopia, and it is frequently needed in asylum and immigration work. Speakers from the two countries understand each other, but Eritrean Tigrinya carries Italian and Arabic loanwords and Tigrayan usage has more Amharic influence. SILA Linguists® supplies Tigrinya interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum interviews and tribunals, children's services, healthcare, police, courts, housing and schools across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield, matched by origin.

Tigrinya interpreters for asylum, age assessment and care

We ask whether your client is from Eritrea or Ethiopia and match the interpreter's background, which helps with vocabulary, place names and cultural references. Confidentiality is a frequent concern in close-knit diaspora communities, so our interpreters are carefully vetted, work under confidentiality agreements and keep strict impartiality. Remote interpreting can bring in an interpreter from outside the client's local area when they prefer it.

Our Tigrinya interpreters are prepared for asylum interviews and appeals, children's services and age assessments, police stations, courts and solicitors' offices, GP surgeries, hospitals and mental health services, housing, benefits and resettlement meetings, and schools and colleges. Same-gender interpreters are often preferred for medical, maternity and personal matters, and we arrange this. Sessions can be held in person, by telephone whenever they are needed, day or night, or by video in our SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Conferences and community events can be covered consecutively or simultaneously.

Tigrinya translation in Ge'ez script

Tigrinya is written in the Ge'ez script and uses some characters that Amharic does not, so our translators work with correct Unicode Ethiopic fonts and our layout checks cover print and screen. Ethiopian documents may use the Ethiopian calendar, and dates on certificates are converted carefully. Personal names have no single standard romanisation, so we follow the spelling in the client's passport or Home Office papers and keep it identical throughout.

Certified Tigrinya translations of birth and marriage certificates, school records, court documents and identity papers carry a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers. Eritrean and Ethiopian papers for the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their rules, from a US certificate of accuracy to NAATI-certified translation. We also translate health, education and housing information into Tigrinya.

Tigrinya transcription and LADO

Interview recordings, phone calls and video evidence in Tigrinya are transcribed with timestamps and a parallel English text. Our language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) helps decision-makers distinguish Eritrean from Ethiopian backgrounds.

Sectors we support in Tigrinya

Our vetted, trained and qualified Tigrinya linguists can support immigration lawyers, asylum interviews and tribunals, children's services, healthcare, police and courts, housing and resettlement teams, schools and charities. One coordinator oversees every case, with confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR compliance throughout. Tigrinya interpreters can join US immigration courts, Canadian refugee hearings and Australian courts and hospitals, matched to Eritrean or Tigrayan speech.

Good to know

Working with Tigrinya

Interpreting

  • Ask the client whether they are from Eritrea or Ethiopia when booking, and pass this on. We aim to match interpreters by origin, which helps with vocabulary, place names and cultural references.
  • Confidentiality is a frequent concern in close-knit diaspora communities. Our interpreters are carefully vetted, work under NDAs and keep to strict impartiality. Remote interpreting by video or telephone can help where a client prefers an interpreter from outside their local area.
  • Same-gender interpreters are often preferred for medical, maternity and sensitive personal matters.
  • Tigrinya is often needed for LADO and nationality assessment work, and for long immigration interviews where consistency of terminology across sessions is important.

Translation

  • Tigrinya is written in the Ge'ez script, an abugida in which each character represents a consonant and vowel combination. It shares most characters with Amharic but uses some that Amharic does not. Translators need a correct Unicode Ethiopic font, and layout teams should check that characters display properly in print and on screen.
  • Documents from Ethiopia may use the Ethiopian calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar in both year and month, so dates on certificates must be converted carefully. Personal names have no single standard romanisation, so we follow the spelling on the client's passport or other identity documents where available.
  • We provide certified Tigrinya translation of birth and marriage certificates, school records, identity documents and statements for UK authorities, educational institutions and international bodies.
