Kinyarwanda is a Bantu language of the Great Lakes region. In Rwanda it is spoken by almost the entire population, which makes it unusual among African countries in having a single shared mother tongue. It is an official language alongside English, French and Swahili. Outside Rwanda, closely related varieties are spoken in south-western Uganda, where the local form is known as Rufumbira, and in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Kinyabwisha and related forms are used.

Kinyarwanda and Kirundi, the national language of Burundi, are close enough to be largely mutually intelligible, and they are sometimes treated as two standard forms of one language. In practice each country has its own spelling conventions, vocabulary and official usage, and speakers usually prefer an interpreter or translator from their own background.

The language is tonal and has a rich system of noun classes and verb prefixes. It is written in the Latin alphabet, with an official orthography revised by Rwandan authorities; tone is not normally marked in everyday writing.

Kinyarwanda services

SILA Linguists®

Kinyarwanda interpreters, translators and LADO with SILA Linguists®

Kinyarwanda is the shared mother tongue of almost everyone in Rwanda and is also spoken as Rufumbira in south-western Uganda and as Kinyabwisha and related forms in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. SILA Linguists® provides Kinyarwanda interpreting, translation and transcription to immigration teams, courts and international justice bodies, hospitals, schools and family services across Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and further afield. Asking about country and area of origin is our first step, because it shapes vocabulary, place names and administrative terms.

Kinyarwanda interpreting for sensitive settings

Many interviews in Kinyarwanda involve traumatic experiences connected with conflict in the Great Lakes region. Our interpreters are calm, neutral and experienced in asylum interviews, tribunal hearings, court proceedings, mental health appointments and safeguarding meetings, and you can ask for a male or female interpreter. Older Rwandans often learned in French at school, while younger people use English, so expect some French or English legal and medical terms in a client's speech; our interpreters handle this naturally.

We provide face-to-face interpreting, telephone interpreting around the clock throughout the year, and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or the platform you specify. For international justice work, conferences and community meetings we supply consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreters. Clients from Burundi are best matched with a Kirundi interpreter, and we will advise if that applies.

Certified translation of Rwandan documents

Rwandan birth certificates, academic qualifications and court papers may be in Kinyarwanda, French or English, sometimes all on the same page. Our certified Kinyarwanda translation covers every language on the document and carries a signed statement of accuracy and completeness, accepted by the Home Office, employers, courts and other UK authorities. Spelling reforms mean older documents follow different conventions, and our translators note this rather than silently standardising names.

We also translate witness statements, letters, medical records, school reports and community information in both directions, keeping terminology and the spelling of names consistent across a case, however many documents it involves.

Kinyarwanda transcription and LADO

Recorded interviews, testimony and voice messages are transcribed with timestamps and then translated into English, with French or Swahili passages flagged. Language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) helps assess whether an applicant was raised in Rwanda, Uganda, the DRC or elsewhere in the region.

Sectors we support in Kinyarwanda

Our vetted, trained and qualified Kinyarwanda linguists can support asylum and immigration services, courts and international justice institutions, NHS and mental health teams, schools and family services, and charities supporting survivors and refugee families. SILA Linguists® assigns one project team and protects every case under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Kinyarwanda

Interpreting

  • Clients may come from Rwanda, Uganda, the DRC or refugee communities in the region. Asking about the country and area of origin helps match vocabulary and avoids confusion over place names and administrative terms.
  • Many older Rwandans used French at school, while younger people more often use English. Some clients will mix in French or English terms, especially for legal and medical vocabulary.
  • Interviews may involve traumatic events, including experiences connected with conflict in the region. Interpreters should be neutral, calm and experienced in sensitive settings, and clients may ask for an interpreter of a particular gender.
  • Kinyarwanda interpreting is available face to face, by video and by telephone.

Translation

  • Rwandan civil documents, academic certificates and court papers may be issued in Kinyarwanda, French or English, sometimes in more than one language on the same page. Certified translation should cover every language used on the document.
  • Spelling reforms mean older documents may follow different conventions from current texts. A translator should note this rather than silently standardising names.
  • Translations for Burundian readers should use Kirundi conventions rather than Kinyarwanda ones.
