Vietnamese is the national language of Vietnam and is spoken by large communities across North America, Europe and Australia. We provide Vietnamese interpreters and translators.
Tiếng Việt
vieVietnamese is an Austroasiatic language of the Vietic branch, with six tones in the northern standard. Many words, especially in formal and technical language, come from Chinese (Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary), and there are some loanwords from French.
There are three broad regional accents: northern (Hanoi), central (Hue and surrounding areas) and southern (Ho Chi Minh City), which differ in tones, some sounds and everyday vocabulary. Communities that left after the end of the Vietnam War, many from the south, may use older or southern terms, while more recent arrivals are often from northern and north-central provinces.
Vietnamese is an analytic language: words do not change form for tense, number or gender, and meaning is carried by word order, particles and context. Interpreters therefore need to make time references and relationships explicit when moving into English.

SILA Linguists® provides Vietnamese interpreters, translators and transcribers for legal, health, employment and business work in the UK and across North America, Australia and New Zealand. Vietnamese communities range from families who left the south many years ago, sometimes using older vocabulary, to recent arrivals from northern and north-central provinces such as Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh. Northern, central and southern accents differ in tones and everyday words, so we match the interpreter to the client's region whenever we can.
Our Vietnamese interpreters are experienced in asylum interviews, modern slavery and trafficking cases, police interviews, criminal courts, employment rights advice and hospital care. We provide face-to-face interpreters, telephone interpreting day or night, bank holidays included, and video interpreting via the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform, along with conference and simultaneous interpreting for trade delegations.
Some clients in exploitation cases are wary of interpreters from their own community, so confidentiality and neutrality are non-negotiable, and we respect reasonable preferences, including gender. Vietnamese pronouns are kinship terms such as anh, chị, em, cô, chú and bác that signal age and respect, and our interpreters choose them carefully. Because Vietnamese grammar does not mark tense, they also make time references explicit in English.
Vietnamese uses the Latin-based Quốc ngữ alphabet, with stacked diacritics marking both vowels and tones; a missing mark can change a word entirely. Our translators and typesetters check every accent. We certify translations of birth certificates, marriage and household registration records, police clearance certificates, court judgments and diplomas with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, keeping the family name, middle name and given name in passport order. Vietnamese records needed in the United States, Canada or Australia are certified in the form each authority specifies, NAATI-certified translation for Australia among them.
For companies selling to Vietnamese users, we localise websites, apps and product information and adapt marketing for Vietnam's fast-growing digital market. AI-assisted translation with human post-editing is available for large product catalogues and help-centre content.
Interview recordings, intercepted calls, social media voice messages and video evidence are transcribed with time markers and a parallel English text, with any dialect features that matter to the case noted. For asylum and trafficking matters, language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) is available through specialist analysts. Northern, central and southern features in a speaker's accent are recorded faithfully, because in some cases they become part of the evidence.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Vietnamese linguists can support immigration and asylum representatives, anti-trafficking charities, police, courts and solicitors, NHS services, employment advisers, nail and beauty sector employers, and businesses importing from Vietnam. You have one point of contact, vetted interpreters and translators, and confidentiality undertakings and the UK GDPR protecting every file. Vietnamese interpreters can assist courts, employers, hospitals and immigration lawyers in the United States, Canada and Australia.
