The African Yao language is unrelated to the Yao (Mien) languages of China and South-East Asia, so it is important to specify which one is needed. In Malawi, Ciyawo is spoken mainly in the southern districts around Mangochi and Machinga; in Mozambique, mainly in Niassa province; and in Tanzania, in the south, including Ruvuma and Mtwara regions.

Regional varieties differ, and each country's spelling tends to follow its main national language: Malawian Ciyawo follows conventions close to Chichewa, while Tanzanian writing is influenced by Swahili. Many Yao speakers also use Chichewa, Swahili or Portuguese depending on where they live.

  • Main areas: Malawi (Mangochi, Machinga, Balaka, Zomba), Mozambique (Niassa)
  • Also used: Tanzania (Ruvuma, Mtwara)

How we help

Yao services

SILA Linguists®

Yao (Ciyawo) interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

African Yao, or Ciyawo, is spoken in southern Malawi around Mangochi and Machinga, in Mozambique's Niassa province and in southern Tanzania, including Ruvuma and Mtwara. It is unrelated to the Yao (Mien) languages of China and South-East Asia, so we always confirm which Yao you need. SILA Linguists® provides Ciyawo interpreters, translators and transcribers for healthcare and public health programmes, immigration and legal casework, community outreach and researchers, for clients in the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Ciyawo interpreting by country and variety

Regional varieties differ, and each country's speakers mix in a different second language: Chichewa in Malawi, Swahili in Tanzania, Portuguese in Mozambique. Telling us the client's country helps us choose an interpreter who knows the right variety and those borrowed words. Many Yao speakers are Muslim, and some clients prefer an interpreter of the same gender for medical or personal matters, which we arrange on request.

Telephone and video interpreting are available at all hours, with video in our SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses, and face-to-face attendance where a suitable interpreter can travel. We can also discuss relay through Chichewa, Swahili or Portuguese depending on the speaker's other languages. Typical assignments include clinic appointments, public health programmes, immigration and legal advice, and community outreach meetings, with consecutive interpreting for focus groups and village meetings. A short briefing on the purpose of the session helps the interpreter prepare the right vocabulary, especially for clinical or legal terms that have no settled Ciyawo equivalent.

Ciyawo translation and certified documents

Ciyawo is written in the Latin alphabet, but Malawian spelling follows conventions close to Chichewa while Tanzanian writing reflects Swahili, so our translators need to know the reader's country. We translate health campaigns, consent forms, community information and research materials into Ciyawo, and letters and statements into English.

Official documents from Malawi and Tanzania are generally issued in English, with Swahili also used in Tanzania, and those from Mozambique in Portuguese. Swahili and Portuguese records can be translated and signed to confirm accuracy; UK authorities such as immigration officers, courts and universities accept these certified translations, and so do employers.

Research recordings and transcription

Health and development research around Lake Malawi often records interviews in Ciyawo. We transcribe them with time codes, label passages in Chichewa, Swahili or Portuguese and supply English translation. For asylum cases, SILA Linguists® can also arrange language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO).

Good to know

Working with Yao

Interpreting

  • Tell us which country the speaker comes from. This helps us choose an interpreter familiar with the right variety and the second languages the speaker may mix in.
  • We can also discuss relay through Chichewa, Swahili or Portuguese, depending on the speaker's other languages. Remote interpreting by telephone or video is available too.
  • Many Yao speakers are Muslim, and some clients may prefer an interpreter of the same gender for medical or personal matters.

Translation

  • Ciyawo is written in the Latin alphabet. Spelling differs between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, so translators should know the reader's country. Official documents from these countries are generally issued in English (Malawi, Tanzania, with Swahili also used in Tanzania) or Portuguese (Mozambique), and we can provide certified translation of those documents.
