Northern Ndebele (isiNdebele) is a Nguni Bantu language closely related to Zulu. Its history goes back to the early nineteenth century, when Mzilikazi and his followers moved north from what is now South Africa and settled in the area around present-day Bulawayo. The language absorbed words from Kalanga, Shona, Sotho and Tswana along the way, and it now has its own standard and literature.

It is one of the official languages recognised by the Constitution of Zimbabwe and is the main language of Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South and parts of the Midlands. It is a different language from Southern Ndebele of South Africa, even though the names are the same. Many Ndebele speakers also speak English and some Shona.

How we help

Northern Ndebele services

SILA Linguists®

Northern Ndebele interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

Northern Ndebele, or isiNdebele, is the language of Bulawayo, Matabeleland and parts of Zimbabwe's Midlands, and SILA Linguists® provides Ndebele interpreters, translators and transcribers to clients in the United Kingdom, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Clients may call it Ndebele, Sindebele or isiNdebele. Although close to Zulu, it has its own vocabulary, idiom and spelling, and it is a separate language from Southern Ndebele in South Africa, so we always book a Zimbabwean Ndebele speaker who knows whether the client is from the city or a rural district.

Ndebele interpreters for sensitive conversations

Our interpreters work in immigration and asylum interviews, solicitors' meetings, courts and tribunals, mental health assessments, GP and hospital appointments, and social care and safeguarding visits. Telephone interpreting is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video sessions run on the SILA Linguists® app or a platform of your choosing.

Many Zimbabweans speak good English and may want an interpreter only for complex or emotional topics; we brief interpreters to check the client's preference at the start. Respectful forms of address matter, especially with older people. Consecutive interpreting is the norm, with simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting available for conferences and community events, and you can ask for an interpreter of either gender.

Translation and certified translation

Ndebele follows a Zimbabwean spelling standard that differs from Zulu in places, so a Zulu translation is no substitute. We translate health leaflets, appointment letters, tenancy information and community notices into Ndebele, and statements, letters and messages from Ndebele into English.

Zimbabwean birth, marriage and education certificates are usually in English, but where Ndebele documents or handwritten material form part of a case, our certified translations include a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts and tribunals, the Home Office and education providers, and by employers.

Transcription and origin questions

We transcribe Ndebele audio and video, from interview recordings to voice messages, with timestamps plus an English version, marking any switches into English or Shona. Where an asylum claim turns on where someone grew up, origin analysis (LADO) based on the features of a person's speech can be arranged by trained language analysts. Subtitles can be added to Ndebele video for community and training use.

Where we can help in Ndebele

Our vetted, trained and qualified Ndebele linguists can support immigration lawyers, the courts, NHS trusts and mental health services, local authority social workers, schools and charities supporting Zimbabwean families, as well as universities welcoming Zimbabwean students and international development teams working in Matabeleland. You have a small dedicated team handling scheduling and delivery, and every linguist is vetted and works under confidentiality undertakings, with all data processed under UK GDPR, giving you continuity and discretion on every case.

Good to know

Working with Northern Ndebele

Interpreting

  • Zimbabwean clients may describe their language as Ndebele, isiNdebele or Sindebele. Because the language is close to Zulu, a Zulu speaker may understand much of it, but vocabulary, pronunciation and idiom differ. A Zimbabwean Ndebele interpreter is the right choice for legal and medical work. Tell us if the client is from Bulawayo or a rural area so we can match the right linguist.
  • Some clients are equally comfortable in English and may only need an interpreter for complex or emotional subjects. Check the client's preference at the start, and remember that respectful forms of address are important, especially with older speakers.

Translation

  • Ndebele is written in the Latin alphabet with a Zimbabwean spelling standard that differs from Zulu spelling in places, so a Zulu translation is not a substitute. Zimbabwean birth, marriage and education documents are usually issued in English, but translation into Ndebele is common for health leaflets, letters and community information. Certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
