Polish is the official language of Poland and an official EU language. Polish-speaking minorities live in Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, and there are large communities in the UK, Ireland, Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia. Polish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the UK after English.

Standard Polish is used across the country with relatively small regional differences, although local speech in Silesia, the Podhale highlands and other areas has distinctive features. Kashubian is a recognised regional language in northern Poland, and the status of Silesian is debated; some consider it a separate language.

Polish uses the Latin alphabet with ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż, and has seven grammatical cases.

Polish has a strong written tradition and a relatively uniform standard, which makes regional mismatches less of an issue than in many languages. The more common practical questions concern formality, specialist terminology in health and law, and the correct handling of names and diacritics in documents and databases.

SILA Linguists®

Polish interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

Polish is the official language of Poland and an official EU language, spoken by minorities in Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine and by large communities in the UK, Ireland, Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia. SILA Linguists® provides Polish interpreters, translators and transcribers to hospitals and GPs, schools and children's services, police, courts and probation, employers, housing teams and businesses across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield.

Polish interpreting with the right courtesy

Formality matters in Polish. Adults address strangers and professionals as Pan and Pani with third-person verbs, and using the familiar ty too early can sound disrespectful, so our interpreters keep the appropriate level of politeness, whether with a patient, a parent or a defendant.

Our Polish interpreters are prepared for hospitals, GP surgeries and maternity services, schools and children's services, social care, police custody and interviews, magistrates' and crown courts, probation, employment tribunals, and housing and benefits appointments. We provide face-to-face interpreters, telephone interpreting around the clock, every day of the year, and video through the SILA Linguists® video app or a secure platform of your choice. For employers in construction, manufacturing and logistics we provide interpreters for inductions, toolbox talks and disciplinary meetings. Business events can have consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting.

Polish translation, names and certification

Polish surnames change with grammar and gender, as in Kowalski and Kowalska, and documents may use different forms of the same name. Our translators keep names exactly as in the identity documents and preserve every diacritic, ą, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż, which UK systems often lose. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, Polish criminal record certificates, school and university diplomas, medical records and court documents carry a signed statement of accuracy and completeness, accepted by recruiters, the Home Office and other UK authorities. Polish papers going to US, Canadian or Australian offices are certified to local requirements, NAATI-certified translation included for Australia. In Poland, official translations are made by sworn translators listed by the Ministry of Justice, so check what a Polish authority requires.

For employers and businesses, we translate health and safety documentation, contracts, staff handbooks and marketing, and localise websites and software for Polish users, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for large volumes.

Polish transcription and subtitling

Police interviews, phone calls, voice notes and family court recordings in Polish are transcribed with timestamps and then translated into English. We also subtitle workplace safety videos and training content.

Where we can help in Polish

Our vetted, trained and qualified Polish linguists can support NHS hospitals, GPs and maternity services, schools and children's services, police, courts and probation, employers in construction and logistics, housing and benefits teams, and businesses trading with Poland. Every booking is managed by one coordinator at SILA Linguists®, and case files stay confidential under NDAs and UK GDPR. Polish interpreters can support courts, hospitals and employers in the United States, Canada and Australia as well as across the UK.

Good to know

Working with Polish

Interpreting

  • Formality is important. Polish adults address strangers and professionals as Pan (Sir) and Pani (Madam) with third-person verbs, and using the familiar ty too early can sound disrespectful. Interpreters follow the appropriate level of politeness.
  • Polish interpreting is frequently needed in hospitals and GP surgeries, maternity services, schools, social care, employment tribunals, police and courts. We provide face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting, including 24/7 telephone access.

Translation

  • Polish names change form with grammar and gender (Kowalski, Kowalska), and documents may use different forms of the same name. Translators keep names exactly as in the identity documents and preserve all diacritics, which are often lost in UK systems.
  • In Poland, official translations are made by sworn translators (tłumacze przysięgli) on a list kept by the Ministry of Justice. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies; for documents going to Polish courts or offices, a translation by a Polish sworn translator may be required. Where a document is needed in the United States, Canada or Australia, we arrange the certification the receiving authority expects, from a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities to NAATI-certified translation for Australia.
