Chichewa is a Bantu language. The name Chichewa is mainly used in Malawi, while Nyanja (Chinyanja or Cinyanja) is the usual name in Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Both names refer to essentially the same language, though the forms used in Lusaka and in central Malawi differ in vocabulary, pronunciation and some spelling conventions.

In Malawi, Chichewa is spoken as a first or second language by most of the population and is used alongside English in government, broadcasting and education. In Zambia, Nyanja is one of the official regional languages, spoken in Eastern Province and widely used as the everyday language of Lusaka. It is also spoken in Tete and Niassa provinces of Mozambique and by communities in Zimbabwe.

Chichewa is a tonal language with a system of noun classes marked by prefixes. It is written in the Latin alphabet; the letter ŵ, found in the name Chicheŵa, represents a sound used in some Malawian varieties, and is often written simply as w. Zambian Nyanja uses 'c' where Malawian spelling often uses 'ch', as in Cinyanja.

There are Chichewa- and Nyanja-speaking communities in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, the United States and Australia, many of whom also speak English.

How we help

Chichewa (Nyanja) services

SILA Linguists®

Chichewa and Nyanja interpreting and translation services from SILA Linguists®

Chichewa is the name used in Malawi and Nyanja the name used in Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe for what is essentially one Bantu language, though the speech of central Malawi and the town Nyanja of Lusaka differ in vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling. SILA Linguists® supplies Chichewa and Nyanja interpreters and translators for healthcare, legal, education and social care work across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and we match the country your client or readers come from.

Chichewa interpreters for health, legal and care settings

A client from Lusaka may use a Nyanja full of English and Bemba loanwords, which a Malawian interpreter will understand but may not reproduce naturally, so we check the country before we book. Many speakers have good English, yet consent conversations, safeguarding meetings and court hearings should happen in the language the client understands best, especially for older people and recent arrivals.

We cover GP and hospital appointments, maternity and sexual health clinics, immigration appointments, solicitors' meetings, court hearings, school meetings and social care reviews. Interpreters attend in person, join by phone at any hour throughout the year, or connect by video via the SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom and similar platforms. Respect is expressed through plural forms of address and honorific prefixes, and our interpreters carry that courtesy into English. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, including remote simultaneous interpreting, are available for NGO workshops and conferences.

Chichewa translation that reads naturally to its audience

Public health materials work only if they sound local. Tell us whether readers are Malawian or Zambian and our translators follow the right spelling conventions and vocabulary, using the letter ŵ for Malawian texts where appropriate. We translate patient information, consent forms, vaccination and screening campaigns, research questionnaires, community leaflets and court material, and we translate Chichewa letters, messages and statements into English.

Official documents from Malawi and Zambia are mostly issued in English, but where a Chichewa or Nyanja document needs to be certified, our translation includes a signed statement of accuracy and completeness, accepted by the Home Office, the courts, colleges and other UK authorities. For Australian authorities we arrange NAATI-certified translation, and for US immigration a certificate of accuracy. AI-assisted translation with human post-editing is available for large research or campaign projects.

Transcription for research and evidence

NGO evaluations, academic studies and legal cases often generate Chichewa recordings. We deliver time-stamped transcripts with English translation, marking any switches into English or Bemba, and can add subtitles to awareness videos.

Sectors we support in Chichewa

Our vetted, trained and qualified Chichewa and Nyanja linguists can support NHS trusts and public health teams, immigration advisers, courts and solicitors, schools, social care services, universities and research groups, and charities working in Malawi and Zambia. SILA Linguists® assigns one project team to your work, vets every linguist and protects all information under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. Chichewa interpreters can assist hospitals, universities and immigration interviews in the United States and Australia as well as the UK.

Good to know

Working with Chichewa (Nyanja)

Interpreting

  • Check the client's country. A client from Lusaka may speak a town Nyanja with many English and Bemba loanwords, which a Malawian interpreter will understand but may not reproduce naturally, and vice versa.
  • Many speakers have good English, but health, legal and safeguarding conversations should take place in the language the client understands best, particularly with older people and new arrivals.
  • Respect and formality are expressed through plural forms of address and honorific prefixes, which an experienced interpreter conveys appropriately.
  • Telephone, video and face-to-face interpreting are all available.

Translation

  • Confirm whether the readers are Malawian or Zambian so the translator can follow the right spelling conventions and vocabulary. Public health and information materials often need to be checked against local usage.
  • Fonts must support ŵ if Malawian spelling is used. Most standard fonts do.
  • Official documents from Malawi and Zambia are usually in English; Chichewa and Nyanja translation is most often needed for patient information, consent forms, community leaflets and court material. Certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies. If your documents are for use in the United States or Australia, we arrange the certification required there. This ranges from a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities to NAATI-certified translation for Australia.
