Most Lugbara speakers live on the high ground between the Nile and the Congo watershed: in Uganda around Arua, Maracha and neighbouring districts, and in the DRC mainly in Aru territory of Ituri province. Arua town is the commercial centre of the language area.

Lugbara surprises people who expect it to resemble its neighbours. Acholi to the east and Kakwa to the north are Nilotic languages, but Lugbara belongs to the Central Sudanic group, in the Moru-Madi branch with Ma'di and Moru. Central Sudanic is usually placed within the Nilo-Saharan family.

Aringa, spoken around Yumbe and sometimes called Low Lugbara, is sometimes listed separately. Whether it counts as a dialect of Lugbara or a separate language is a matter of definition, and many speakers understand both. Lugbara itself is tonal, so pitch distinguishes words that are spelt alike.

Lugbara (Lugbarati) interpreting and translation by SILA Linguists®

Lugbara, or Lugbarati, is spoken on the high ground between the Nile and the Congo watershed: in Uganda around Arua, Maracha and neighbouring districts, and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo mainly in Aru territory, Ituri. It surprises people who expect it to resemble its Nilotic neighbours Acholi and Kakwa: Lugbara is Central Sudanic, related to Ma'di and Moru. SILA Linguists® provides Lugbara interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum and resettlement, primary and maternity care, courts and tribunals, and schools and family services across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield.

Lugbara interpreting for Ugandan and Congolese clients

We ask whether your client comes from the Ugandan or the Congolese side, and whether they consider themselves Lugbara or Aringa. People from the DRC may be more at ease with French or Swahili as second languages, while Ugandan speakers often know English and Luganda or Swahili, to varying degrees. For detailed medical, legal or asylum interviews, interpreting directly in Lugbara gives the most reliable account.

Video interpreting suits most appointments and is easy to set up for clients anywhere, using the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform; telephone interpreting is open at any hour, every day. Face-to-face interpreting can be arranged for tribunal hearings, maternity appointments and school meetings where an interpreter can attend. Maternity and primary care clients can ask for a female interpreter, and family services meetings can be staffed with an interpreter who is experienced in safeguarding discussions.

Lugbara translation and certified documents

Lugbara has a long tradition of church publications and school readers in the Latin alphabet, but spelling differs slightly between older and newer material, so tell us who your readers are. We translate maternity and health information, school letters, resettlement guidance and family services correspondence into Lugbara, and statements and letters into English.

Ugandan civil documents are usually in English and Congolese ones in French. We provide certified translation of French records, signed with a statement that the translation is accurate, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers.

Transcription and LADO

Recorded interviews and audio evidence in Lugbara are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with French, Swahili or English passages flagged. For asylum and resettlement cases where origin matters, SILA Linguists® offers language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO). Our transcribers record exactly what was said and leave any judgement about a speaker's background to the specialist analysts.

Where we can help in Lugbara

Our vetted, trained and qualified Lugbara linguists can support asylum and resettlement services, GP and maternity teams, courts and tribunals, schools and family services, and refugee charities.
