Mandinka interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Mandinka is a Manding language of The Gambia, southern Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, sometimes referred to as Mandingo. SILA Linguists® provides Mandinka interpreters and translators and helps clients identify the right Manding variety.
Mandinka
mnkMandinka is the largest language of The Gambia and is widely spoken in the Casamance region of Senegal and in northern Guinea-Bissau. It belongs to the Manding group of the Mande family, a cluster that also includes Bambara in Mali, Maninka (Malinke) in Guinea and Mali, and Dyula (Jula) in Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. The varieties share history and a great deal of vocabulary, but speakers of more distant ones do not always understand each other easily.
The term Mandingo is used in English in more than one way. It is often an older name for Mandinka specifically, but it can also refer to Manding-speaking peoples more generally, for example the Mandingo of Liberia and Sierra Leone, whose speech is closer to Maninka. When a client asks for Mandingo, it is worth confirming the country of origin.
Mandinka is written in the Latin alphabet, with official orthographies in The Gambia and Senegal that differ slightly. Arabic-script Ajami has a long history among Muslim scholars, and the N'Ko alphabet, created for Manding languages, is also used by some writers. Mandinka is the language of a famous oral tradition kept by griots (jali), including the epic of Sunjata and kora music.

Mandinka is the largest language of The Gambia and is widely spoken in Senegal's Casamance and northern Guinea-Bissau. It belongs to the Manding group alongside Bambara, Maninka and Dyula, which share history and much vocabulary yet are not always easily understood across the group. SILA Linguists® provides Mandinka interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration services, courts, police, maternity and health teams, schools and community health campaigns across Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and further afield, matching each client's country and region.
A Gambian Mandinka speaker is best served by a Mandinka interpreter rather than a Bambara or Maninka one, even though the languages are related, and the English term Mandingo can mean several things, so we confirm exactly what the client speaks. Many Gambian clients also use Wolof and English, and Senegalese clients often speak French or Wolof; where people switch between languages, our interpreters agree at the start which one the session will use.
Respectful forms of address, especially towards elders, are important, and many clients prefer an interpreter of the same gender for health and family matters. We arrange this for asylum interviews, police interviews, court hearings, maternity appointments, school and family support meetings. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day on every day of the year, video interpreting runs through the SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's video system, and on-site interpreting can be booked for hearings and clinics. Community health events can be covered consecutively.
We choose the Gambian or Senegalese spelling convention according to your readers, and Ajami or N'Ko versions can be produced if raised early. Because many speakers are more used to spoken than written Mandinka, audio and video often work best for community information, and we can record translated health messages.
Official documents from The Gambia are in English, from Senegal in French and from Guinea-Bissau in Portuguese. We provide certified translation from French and Portuguese, signed with a statement of accuracy and completeness that the Home Office and other UK authorities accept, as do employers.
Interviews and recorded evidence in Mandinka are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with Wolof, French or English passages marked. For asylum claims, SILA Linguists® offers language analysis to establish origin (LADO). Recordings can also be subtitled for community screenings.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Mandinka linguists can support immigration and asylum teams, police and courts, NHS maternity services, schools, family support services and public health campaigns reaching Gambian and Senegalese communities. Every booking is handled by one project team, and signed confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protect the people involved.
