Garifuna is an Arawakan language, related to languages of South America such as Wayuu and Lokono. It took shape on the island of St Vincent among a people of Indigenous Caribbean and African descent. After their removal by the British to Roatán, the Garifuna settled along the coast of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua. The language, dance and music of the Garifuna are a treasured oral and cultural heritage.

Garifuna vocabulary includes words from Carib, French, Spanish and English, and the language historically had distinct words used by men and by women, a feature that has weakened over time. Honduras has the largest Garifuna population, along its northern coast and on the Bay Islands. In Guatemala, Garifuna is spoken in Livingston and Puerto Barrios in Izabal and is one of the country's officially recognised languages. In Belize, communities include Dangriga, Hopkins and Punta Gorda, and in Nicaragua the Pearl Lagoon area. Many speakers also live in the United States.

  • Main areas: Honduras (Atlántida, Colón, Cortés, Gracias a Dios, Bay Islands)
  • Also used: Guatemala (Izabal), Belize (Stann Creek, Toledo), Nicaragua (South Caribbean Coast)
  • Other regions

How we help

Garifuna services

SILA Linguists®

Garifuna interpreting, translation and transcription from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Garifuna interpreters and translators for immigration and asylum services, healthcare providers, courts and cultural organisations in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Garifuna is an Arawakan language that took shape on St Vincent among people of Indigenous Caribbean and African descent. After their removal by the British to Roatán, the Garifuna settled along the coasts of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua, and many now live in the United States.

Garifuna interpreters and the right relay language

Garifuna itself varies only modestly between countries, and speakers from Honduras, Guatemala and Belize generally understand one another. Second languages differ, though: speakers from Honduras and Guatemala usually also speak Spanish, while those from Belize usually speak English and Belize Kriol. That shapes relay options and how interpreters handle the many loanwords from Carib, French, Spanish and English.

Younger people in some communities are more comfortable in Spanish or English, while older community members may prefer Garifuna for sensitive matters, so we ask. We provide face-to-face Garifuna interpreters where linguists are local, telephone interpreting at any time, and video via the SILA Linguists® app or your platform of choice. Asylum interviews and hearings are interpreted consecutively. Garifuna historically had some separate words used by men and by women, and clients can ask for a female or male interpreter.

Garifuna translation and certified translation

Garifuna uses the Latin alphabet, but spelling conventions differ between Belize, Honduras and Guatemala, so we confirm where your readers are before translating community health information, educational materials or cultural texts. Settlements such as Livingston, Dangriga, Hopkins and Punta Gorda keep their established spellings.

Civil documents from Honduras and Guatemala are issued in Spanish, and those from Belize in English. Where certified translation is needed, we work from Spanish and attach a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Documents from Honduras or Belize bound for US immigration receive the translator's certificate of accuracy that American officials ask for.

Transcription, heritage and origin analysis

The language, dance and music of the Garifuna are a treasured oral and cultural heritage. Museums, broadcasters and researchers can ask us to transcribe and subtitle songs, interviews and performances. For legal work we produce time-coded transcripts with an English version. Where an asylum claim depends on whether a person comes from Honduras, Guatemala or elsewhere, language analysis (LADO) can be commissioned.

Sectors we support in Garifuna

Our vetted, trained and qualified Garifuna linguists can support immigration and asylum services, courts and solicitors, hospitals and community health teams, schools and cultural heritage projects. Garifuna communities in American cities can rely on our interpreters for immigration court, criminal defence meetings, emergency rooms and parent-teacher conferences.

Good to know

Working with Garifuna

Interpreting

  • Second languages differ by country: Garifuna speakers from Honduras and Guatemala usually also speak Spanish, while those from Belize usually speak English and Belize Kriol. This affects relay options and how interpreters handle loanwords. Regional differences in Garifuna itself are modest, and speakers from different countries generally understand each other.
  • Younger people in some communities are more comfortable in Spanish or English than in Garifuna, while older community members may prefer Garifuna for sensitive matters. We ask the client's preference. We provide Garifuna interpreters face to face where linguists are local, and by video or telephone elsewhere.

Translation

  • Garifuna is written in the Latin alphabet. Spelling conventions differ between Belize, Honduras and Guatemala, so we confirm the target readers. Civil documents from Honduras and Guatemala are in Spanish, and from Belize in English; certified translations are made from those languages when needed. Garifuna translation is often requested for community health information, cultural projects and educational materials.
