Face-to-face
Moroccan Arabic interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Moroccan Arabic, or Darija, is the everyday language of most people in Morocco and of a large diaspora in Europe. It differs strongly from Middle Eastern Arabic, so we use interpreters who speak it natively or fluently.
الدارجة المغربية
aryMoroccan Arabic is the main spoken language of Morocco. Morocco's official languages are Arabic and Tamazight (Amazigh), which was made official in the current constitution, and French is widely used in business, administration and higher education. Many Moroccans speak a Tamazight language such as Tarifit, Tamazight of the Middle Atlas or Tashelhit, as well as Darija.
Darija has many Amazigh, French and Spanish loanwords, and its pronunciation, with heavy vowel reduction, can sound very different from Middle Eastern Arabic. There are regional varieties: northern speech around Tangier and Tetouan, the urban speech of Fez and Rabat, the speech of Casablanca, which is increasingly a national norm, and rural and Bedouin varieties. In the far south, Hassaniya Arabic is spoken.

Moroccan Arabic is the main spoken language of Morocco and of large Moroccan communities in France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Its heavy vowel reduction and Amazigh, French and Spanish loanwords make it sound very different from Middle Eastern Arabic. SILA Linguists® provides Moroccan Arabic interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration services, courts, police, healthcare providers, schools and tourism businesses in Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. We ask whether the speaker is from Tangier and the north, Fez, Rabat, Casablanca or a rural area, and whether they might prefer Tarifit or Tashelhit.
Interpreters from the Middle East often find rapid, colloquial Moroccan speech hard to follow, so for legal, healthcare and immigration work we book a Moroccan Arabic interpreter. Many Moroccans are comfortable in French, or in the north in Spanish, and those from the Rif or the Souss may prefer Tarifit or Tashelhit; we ask the client.
Face-to-face interpreting covers police custody, magistrates' and crown courts, asylum interviews, maternity and GP appointments, social services and school meetings. For urgent calls our Darija phone interpreters can be reached at any hour, and planned video sessions run on the SILA Linguists® app or the client's own platform. For tourism and business meetings we provide consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting for events.
Moroccan official documents are written in Modern Standard Arabic and often French. Names usually follow French-style Latin spellings, which we keep consistent with passports and existing records. We translate civil records, family book (livret de famille) extracts, marriage contracts, court rulings, school and university certificates and commercial documents, certifying each translation with a signed and dated statement, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers.
Darija appears in advertising, social media and some literature in Arabic or Latin script, and we can adapt marketing and tourism content for Moroccan audiences.
We transcribe recorded Darija, including police interviews, intercepted calls and social media audio in which speakers mix Arabic, French and Spanish, producing a time-coded transcript and an English version. SILA Linguists® also provides language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) for Moroccan speakers where nationality is in question.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Moroccan Arabic linguists can support immigration and asylum services, courts, police and investigators with recordings to transcribe, NHS and healthcare providers, social services and schools, and businesses in tourism and trade. One coordinating team looks after every Moroccan Arabic booking. Linguists sign non-disclosure agreements, and personal data is handled under UK GDPR.
