Bassa interpreting and translation

Bassa is a name used for several unrelated West and Central African languages. Most requests concern the Bassa of Liberia, a Kru language, while Basaa of Cameroon is a separate Bantu language. We match each client with a linguist for the language they actually speak.

Liberian Bassa belongs to the Kru branch of Niger-Congo. It is spoken mainly in Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi and Montserrado counties, including Monrovia, with smaller communities in Sierra Leone. It is tonal, and many speakers also use Liberian English or Liberian Kreyol. Bassa has its own historic script, Vah, which is now encoded in Unicode, although modern writing mostly uses a Latin alphabet.

Basaa of Cameroon is a Bantu language of the Centre and Littoral regions, around Édéa and Eséka, and its speakers commonly use French as well. Several smaller Basa languages of central Nigeria belong to yet another group. Because the names sound alike, the country of origin is the quickest way to identify the language needed.

How we help

Bassa services

SILA Linguists®

Bassa interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

The name Bassa covers languages that are not related: Liberian Bassa, a tonal Kru language of Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi and Montserrado; Basaa, a Bantu language of Cameroon's Centre and Littoral regions; and several Basa languages of central Nigeria. SILA Linguists® provides interpreters and translators for each of them, for legal, health, immigration and social care work across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Tell us the speaker's country and region, and we will identify the right language at once.

Bassa interpreters matched by country

A Liberian Bassa interpreter cannot interpret for a Cameroonian Basaa speaker, and the reverse is equally true, so country of origin decides the booking. Our Bassa interpreters support asylum and immigration interviews, healthcare appointments, court proceedings, social services and family support meetings. We attend in person, offer telephone interpreting around the clock, every day of the year, and provide video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app, which also lets us reach linguists in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and the diaspora.

Liberian clients may move between Bassa and Liberian English, and our interpreters keep to the language the client chooses and flag any point where meaning is uncertain. Personal histories can touch on the Liberian civil wars, so a short briefing helps the interpreter prepare. Cameroonian Basaa speakers often use French as well. A female or male interpreter is available on request.

Bassa translation and certified documents

Liberian official documents are issued in English, and Cameroonian ones in French or English, so we check whether a document actually contains Bassa before assigning a translator. Certified translations of French-language Cameroonian records include a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities.

Community and health information in Liberian Bassa is written in the Latin orthography. Bassa also has its own historic script, Vah, now in Unicode, which suits cultural and heritage projects rather than general information. Basaa materials for Cameroonian readers follow that language's own Latin spelling.

Bassa transcription and language analysis

Recorded interviews, statements and phone calls are transcribed with regular time markers and put into English, with Liberian English, Kreyol or French passages marked. In asylum claims where origin is questioned, language analysis (LADO) can be arranged with specialist analysts.

Sectors we support in Bassa

Our vetted, trained and qualified Bassa linguists can support immigration and asylum services, solicitors and courts, NHS and community health teams, social services and family support organisations. You get one project team, vetted linguists, and confidentiality undertakings and the UK GDPR protecting every case. We can also prepare notices, recorded messages and event interpreting for churches and community associations serving Liberian and Cameroonian families.

Good to know

Working with Bassa

Interpreting

  • Tell us the country and region the speaker comes from. A Liberian Bassa interpreter cannot interpret for a Cameroonian Basaa speaker, and the same applies the other way round.
  • Liberian clients may switch between Bassa and Liberian English. Interpreters should keep to the language the client chooses and flag any point where meaning is uncertain. Telephone and video interpreting are practical for Bassa, and they let us reach interpreters in Liberia, Sierra Leone or the diaspora. Personal histories may touch on the Liberian civil wars, so a short briefing helps the interpreter prepare.

Translation

  • Liberian official documents are issued in English, and Cameroonian ones in French or English, so check whether a document actually contains Bassa before ordering. Community material in Liberian Bassa uses the Latin orthography; Vah is suited to cultural projects rather than general information. Certified translations, with a signed statement of accuracy, are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
