Nyamwezi, known to its speakers as Kinyamwezi, is a Bantu language of west-central Tanzania with a long history as a language of trade along the caravan routes.
Kinyamwezi
nymNyamwezi is spoken mainly in Tabora Region and surrounding parts of west-central Tanzania. It sits at one end of a dialect continuum with Sukuma, spoken to the north around Mwanza and Shinyanga. Speakers from neighbouring areas can often understand each other, but Nyamwezi and Sukuma are usually treated as separate languages, and some varieties such as Konongo are sometimes counted as Nyamwezi dialects.
In the nineteenth century Nyamwezi traders and porters were central to the long-distance trade between the interior and the coast, which helped spread both their language and Swahili. Today nearly all Nyamwezi speakers also speak Swahili, Tanzania's national language. Nyamwezi is written in the Latin alphabet, but it is used mainly in speech, church life and community settings rather than in official documents.

Nyamwezi, or Kinyamwezi, is spoken in Tabora Region and the surrounding parts of west-central Tanzania, at one end of a dialect continuum with Sukuma to the north. In the nineteenth century, Nyamwezi traders and porters carried goods between the interior and the coast, spreading both their language and Swahili. SILA Linguists® supports Nyamwezi speakers on behalf of asylum and immigration teams, medical services, community and family support providers and linguistic researchers across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield.
A Nyamwezi interpreter is often most helpful for older clients or people from rural Tabora who feel more confident in their home language than in Swahili. Before booking, we ask whether the client would be comfortable in Swahili or English. If not, a Nyamwezi interpreter closes the gaps that open when someone speaks a second language under stress, as in an asylum interview, a medical consultation or a family support meeting.
A Sukuma speaker may be able to help in some situations, but only by agreement with the client, and relay through Swahili is possible for certain language pairs. Remote interpreting is the most practical route: telephone at any hour of every day, or video via our SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Face-to-face sessions and consecutive interpreting for fieldwork and community meetings are arranged where a suitable interpreter can attend, and we can provide a female or male interpreter on request.
Written Nyamwezi uses Latin letters with spelling similar to Swahili, so no special fonts are required. Because few official texts exist in the language, our translators often need to coin or explain terms, particularly in medicine and law, and they note these choices so that a glossary can be reused across a project. Personal statements, letters and community information are the most common requests.
Tanzanian certificates are issued in Swahili or English, so certified translation for Nyamwezi-speaking clients usually involves Swahili, with our signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office and colleges, and by employers.
Linguistic fieldwork, oral history and health research often produce Nyamwezi recordings. We transcribe them with time codes and an English version alongside, marking Swahili and Sukuma passages, so researchers have reliable data. If an asylum claim depends on where in west-central Tanzania someone grew up, our specialist analysts can carry out language analysis for determining origin (LADO).
Our vetted, trained and qualified Nyamwezi linguists can support asylum and immigration services, hospitals and clinics, community and family support teams, universities and linguistic researchers. SILA Linguists® keeps your work with one project team, uses vetted linguists and protects every interview and document with confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.
