Tamil is a Dravidian language with a very long literary tradition, and it was the first language designated a classical language by the Government of India. It is the official language of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, an official and national language of Sri Lanka alongside Sinhala, and one of the four official languages of Singapore. Tamil is also widely spoken in Malaysia and by long-established communities in Mauritius, Réunion, South Africa and Fiji.

Tamil has strong diglossia: formal written Tamil (centamil) differs considerably from everyday spoken Tamil (pechu tamil). Spoken varieties differ between Tamil Nadu regions, such as Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. They also differ between India and Sri Lanka, where Jaffna Tamil and the Tamil of the eastern province and hill country are distinct. Speech can also vary between communities.

  • Main areas: India (Tamil Nadu, Puducherry), Sri Lanka (Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa)
  • Also used: Sri Lanka (Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Ampara)

Communities abroad are not shown. Point to an area to see its name.

How we help

Tamil services

SILA Linguists®

Tamil interpreting and certified Tamil translation from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Tamil interpreters, translators and transcribers for legal, health, education and business work internationally, from the UK to North America, Australia and New Zealand. Tamil speakers come from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, from Jaffna, the eastern province and the hill country of Sri Lanka, and from Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius and South Africa. Sri Lankan and Indian Tamil differ in vocabulary, sounds and some grammar, so telling us where your client grew up is the single most useful step in getting the match right.

Tamil interpreters for tribunals, hospitals and conferences

Our Tamil interpreting services include face-to-face attendance at immigration tribunals, asylum interviews, criminal and family courts, mental health reviews and school meetings. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting runs on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. For business delegations and academic events we supply consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous Tamil interpreters.

Formal written Tamil, centamil, sounds very different from everyday spoken Tamil, so our interpreters explain official terms in plain language without losing precision. Some Sri Lankan Tamil clients carry painful memories of the civil war; we handle this neutrally and respect reasonable preferences about who interprets, including a female or male interpreter.

Tamil translation into and out of English

We translate Sri Lankan and Indian birth, marriage and death certificates, police reports, court records, land deeds and academic transcripts, transcribing names exactly as they appear in the passport. Certified Tamil translation includes a signed and dated statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers. For Canada we can arrange a provincially certified Tamil translator, and for Australia NAATI-certified translation.

Administrative and legal vocabulary differs between India and Sri Lanka, so we choose terminology for the reader's country. Older files typed in legacy Tamil fonts are converted to Unicode. For companies trading with Chennai, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, we localise websites, product information and marketing in Tamil.

Tamil transcription and language analysis

Police interviews, witness recordings and research interviews are transcribed in full with time codes, then rendered into English, with switches into English or Sinhala marked. Where an asylum claim depends on where a speaker is from, language analysis (LADO) for Tamil can be arranged through specialist analysts.

Settings for our linguists in Tamil

Our vetted, trained and qualified Tamil linguists can support asylum and immigration practitioners, barristers and solicitors, the NHS and mental health teams, schools, local authorities, community organisations and businesses in technology, manufacturing and trade. With SILA Linguists® you have one dedicated project team, carefully vetted Tamil linguists and full confidentiality under signed agreements and UK GDPR. Tamil is also widely needed for public health messages and community consultations, which we can support in print, audio and video. Tamil interpreters can join Canadian immigration and refugee hearings and Australian courts, councils and hospitals, matched to Sri Lankan or Indian Tamil.

Good to know

Working with Tamil

Interpreting

  • Tell us whether the client is from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia or Singapore. Sri Lankan and Indian Tamil differ in vocabulary, pronunciation and some grammar, and clients often find a matched interpreter easier to follow, particularly in asylum or legal settings.
  • Some clients may have personal or community sensitivities related to Sri Lanka's history. We treat this neutrally and respect reasonable preferences about the interpreter.
  • Interpreters move between formal and colloquial Tamil, explaining official terminology in everyday language when needed.
  • Tamil interpreters are widely available for face-to-face, video and telephone work, as well as conference interpreting.

Translation

  • Tamil is written left to right in the Tamil script, which has fewer letters than other Indian scripts and uses relatively few conjuncts. Unicode Tamil fonts are standard; older documents from Sri Lanka and India may use legacy fonts that need converting.
  • Formal written Tamil is used for official documents, and vocabulary choices differ between India and Sri Lanka (for example in administrative and legal terms). We translate for the target country's readers.
  • We provide certified translations of Sri Lankan and Indian birth, marriage and death certificates, police reports, court documents and education records, transcribing names exactly as in the passport.
