Libyan Arabic interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Libyan Arabic is the everyday speech of Libya. It sits between the Maghrebi varieties to the west and Egyptian Arabic to the east, and regional differences within Libya are significant.
ليبي
aylLibyan Arabic is usually grouped with the Maghrebi varieties, though eastern Libyan speech has much in common with the Bedouin Arabic of Egypt's Western Desert. There are three broad dialect areas: Tripolitania in the west, around Tripoli and Misrata; Cyrenaica in the east, around Benghazi; and Fezzan in the south-west. Speech in Tripoli shows more Maghrebi features, while Benghazi speech is closer to eastern Bedouin varieties.
Libyan Arabic has borrowed from Italian, from the colonial period, and from Turkish and Berber. Libya is also home to Amazigh (Berber) speakers, such as those of the Nafusa Mountains and Zuwara, and to Tuareg and Tebu communities, who may prefer their own languages.

Libyan Arabic is spoken across three broad regions: Tripolitania in the west, around Tripoli and Misrata; Cyrenaica in the east, around Benghazi; and Fezzan in the south-west. Tripoli speech leans towards the Maghreb, while Benghazi speech is closer to the Bedouin Arabic of Egypt's Western Desert. SILA Linguists® provides Libyan Arabic interpreters and translators to hospitals, universities, sponsored student programmes, immigration services, courts and oil and energy companies in Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond, and we always ask which part of Libya the person comes from.
A Libyan interpreter is preferable. A Tunisian interpreter may suit western Libyan speakers, and some eastern Libyans find Egyptian interpreters easier to follow. Libya is also home to Amazigh speakers from the Nafusa Mountains and Zuwara, and to Tuareg and Tebu communities, who may prefer their own languages, so we check before booking.
Face-to-face interpreting covers private hospital consultations, medical travel appointments, university meetings, solicitors' offices, courts and asylum interviews. Our phone line covers night-time admissions and weekend emergencies, and video consultations can be held on the SILA Linguists® app or on your platform. For oil and gas projects we supply consecutive interpreters for site meetings and technical briefings, and simultaneous interpreters for conferences.
Libyan official documents are in Modern Standard Arabic, and document formats and issuing authorities have varied over time. Our translators are familiar with Libyan civil records and their terminology, and they convert dates and render official stamps carefully.
We translate birth, marriage and family records, academic certificates and transcripts, medical reports and referral letters, contracts and technical documents for the energy sector. Certified versions are signed and dated by us and accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office and the courts, as well as by British universities and employers.
We transcribe Libyan Arabic interviews, meetings and recorded evidence, timing every turn and supplying an English rendering. Our transcribers recognise Italian, Turkish and Berber loanwords in Libyan speech and mark any passages in Tamazight or English. Where a claim turns on origin, SILA Linguists® can also arrange language analysis (LADO).
Our vetted, trained and qualified Libyan Arabic linguists can support healthcare providers receiving Libyan patients, universities and sponsored student programmes, asylum and immigration services, courts and legal advisers, and companies in the energy and oil sector. One team coordinates Libyan Arabic work. Our linguists are bound by non-disclosure agreements, and personal data is protected under UK GDPR. When a patient's treatment involves several hospitals, we can keep the same interpreter with the family wherever possible.
