Malagasy interpreting and translation

Malagasy is the national language of Madagascar and, unusually for Africa, belongs to the Austronesian family, with its closest relatives in Borneo. SILA Linguists® offers Malagasy interpreters and certified translators for public, legal and commercial work.

Malagasy is spoken throughout Madagascar, where it is an official language together with French. Its origins lie in settlement from South-East Asia, and it is related to the Barito languages of southern Borneo. Over the centuries it absorbed vocabulary from Bantu languages, Arabic, French and English. Speakers also live in Mayotte, where a variety called Kibushi is used, and in the diaspora in France and Réunion.

Malagasy has a number of regional varieties, such as Plateau Malagasy (Merina), Sakalava, Betsimisaraka, Antandroy and Tsimihety. Official Malagasy, based mainly on the Merina variety of the central highlands, is used in schools, government and media and is understood across the island, though regional speech can differ noticeably in vocabulary and pronunciation.

Malagasy has been written in the Latin alphabet since the nineteenth century. Before that, an Arabic-based script called Sorabe was used, mainly in the south-east, for religious and historical texts. The modern alphabet has no letters c, q, u, w or x, and words often end in a lightly pronounced vowel that is written but barely heard.

How we help

Malagasy services

SILA Linguists®

Malagasy interpreters, translators and certified translation from SILA Linguists®

Malagasy is spoken throughout Madagascar, where it shares official status with French, and in Mayotte, as Kibushi, as well as in diaspora communities in France and Réunion. Its roots reach back to the Barito languages of southern Borneo, with later layers from Bantu, Arabic, French and English. SILA Linguists® supplies Malagasy interpreters and translators to legal and immigration practitioners, healthcare providers, businesses in mining and conservation, and academic researchers across the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Malagasy interpreting that respects regional speech and formality

Official Malagasy is based on the Merina variety of the central plateau, but people from coastal and southern regions may speak Sakalava, Betsimisaraka, Antandroy, Tsimihety or other varieties, and many appreciate an interpreter familiar with their region. Educated speakers often use French in law, medicine and higher education, so we clarify at the outset whether a Malagasy or French interpreter is wanted.

Malagasy communication values politeness and indirectness, and speakers may draw on proverbs, ohabolana, and formal speech. Our interpreters convey tone as well as content in legal consultations, immigration appointments, hospital visits and business negotiations. Telephone interpreting is open at all hours, every day, and video interpreting runs through the SILA Linguists® app or the client's own platform. Face-to-face, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, including remote simultaneous interpreting, are available for meetings, site visits and conferences.

Malagasy translation, localisation and certification

Malagasy uses standard Latin letters, so fonts are straightforward, but translated texts often run longer than the English source, which affects layout and subtitling. Personal and place names are long and must be copied exactly, as small spelling differences matter in official records.

Civil and academic documents from Madagascar are usually in French, sometimes bilingual with Malagasy, and our certified translations cover both languages with a signed accuracy statement, accepted by HR departments, universities and other UK authorities. For mining, conservation and development projects we translate contracts, community consultation materials, safety documentation and reports, and we localise websites and campaign content for Malagasy audiences.

Transcription and subtitling

Our Malagasy transcribers produce time-stamped transcripts with English translation for research interviews, community consultations, legal recordings and media. Subtitles in Malagasy or English can be added to documentaries, training videos and project films, allowing for the language's longer line lengths.

Sectors we support in Malagasy

Our vetted, trained and qualified Malagasy linguists can support law firms and immigration advisers, healthcare providers, mining, energy and conservation organisations, universities and research teams, as well as NGOs and charities working with Malagasy communities in Madagascar, Mayotte and Réunion. Your work stays with one project team at SILA Linguists®, and all material is protected under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Malagasy

Interpreting

  • Ask where the client is from. People from coastal or southern regions may speak a variety that differs from Official Malagasy, and some will appreciate an interpreter familiar with their region.
  • Many educated Malagasy speakers also speak French, which is common in law, medicine and higher education in Madagascar. Clarify whether the client wants a Malagasy or French interpreter.
  • Malagasy communication values politeness and indirectness, and speakers may use proverbs (ohabolana) and formal speech. Interpreters should convey tone as well as content.
  • Remote interpreting by telephone or video is often the most efficient choice given where interpreters are based.

Translation

  • Malagasy uses standard Latin letters, so there are no special font issues, but texts are often longer than their English source, which affects layout and subtitling.
  • Madagascan civil and academic documents are usually issued in French, sometimes bilingual with Malagasy. Certified translation may need to cover both languages.
  • Personal and place names are long and should be copied exactly, as small spelling differences matter for official records.
