Mayan and other Indigenous languages of the Americas

K'iche', Mam, Q'eqchi', Kaqchikel and dozens of Indigenous languages of Mexico, Central America and the Gran Chaco.

Mayan, Mexican, Caribbean creole and Gran Chaco languages

The Mayan languages of Guatemala and southern Mexico sit at the heart of this group: Mam, K'iche', Kaqchikel, Q'eqchi', Q'anjob'al, Ixil, Chuj, Akateko, Jakalteko (Popti'), Poqomchi', Tz'utujil, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Ch'ol and Yucatec Maya. For Mexico we also cover Mixtec, Zapotec, Otomi, Mazatec, Totonac, Triqui, Purépecha and Huichol (Wixárika). On the Caribbean coast we provide Garifuna, Miskito, Belize Kriol and Nicaraguan Creole English, and from the Paraguayan Gran Chaco languages such as Nivaclé, Enlhet and Ayoreo.

Many people from Guatemala or Mexico now living in the United States, Canada or Europe have limited Spanish. SILA Linguists® then looks for an interpreter of their first language, in the regional variety that fits.

Indigenous language interpreters for justice, health and education

Consecutive interpreting at a hearing, accompanying a patient in hospital, a meeting between parents and teachers: our Indigenous language interpreters work face-to-face or by phone, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. When the interpreter lives far from your site, video through our app or your platform is often the best route. Simultaneous, conference and RSI interpreting, community interpreting and escort interpreting for travel are also available, with a female or male interpreter as you prefer.

Translation, transcription and subtitling

Many of these languages are mainly oral, and writing conventions vary between communities. Where a document exists in one of them, our translators produce a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy accepted by UK courts, the Home Office, universities and employers, taking care over the spelling of personal and place names.

Time-stamped transcription of recorded interviews, followed by translation, and subtitling of information videos are particularly useful for languages with a strong oral tradition.

Who our Indigenous language linguists can support

Our vetted, trained and qualified linguists can support immigration solicitors, courts, police, asylum services, hospitals, mental health teams, social services, schools and charities. SILA Linguists® brings these rare requests together in one project team, uses only vetted linguists and covers every assignment with an NDA and UK GDPR.
