Wayuu, or Wayuunaiki, belongs to the Arawakan family, which once stretched across much of South America and the Caribbean. It is spoken in the Colombian department of La Guajira and the Venezuelan state of Zulia, and the Wayuu are among the largest Indigenous peoples in both countries. Many Wayuu families move across the border regularly, and many speak Spanish as well as Wayuunaiki.

Wayuu society is organised in matrilineal clans, and disputes are traditionally resolved through the pütchipü'ü, or palabrero, a mediator whose role is deeply respected in Wayuu communities. Colombian and Venezuelan law both recognise Indigenous languages including Wayuunaiki.

How we help

Wayuu services

SILA Linguists®

Wayuu (Wayuunaiki) interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Wayuunaiki interpreting, translation and transcription for humanitarian agencies, migration services, healthcare and nutrition programmes and legal advisers. The Wayuu, among the largest Indigenous peoples of Colombia and Venezuela, live in the Colombian department of La Guajira and the Venezuelan state of Zulia, and many families cross the border regularly. Wayuunaiki is an Arawakan language. Many Wayuu also speak Spanish, but older people and women in rural areas may have limited Spanish, so we check which language is stronger.

Wayuunaiki interpreting for health, migration and family matters

Wayuu society is organised in matrilineal clans, and disputes are traditionally settled by the pütchipü'ü, or palabrero, a mediator whose role is deeply respected in Wayuu communities. In family, legal and social care matters, an interpreter who understands Wayuu kinship terms and clan affiliation avoids misunderstandings that a Spanish-only interpreter might miss.

Remote interpreting is the most practical approach: telephone interpreting is available around the clock, every day of the year, and video sessions run on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Relay through Spanish is often used, and we can arrange a female interpreter for maternal health, nutrition programmes and other sensitive conversations. For community consultations we provide consecutive interpreting, with face-to-face attendance where a linguist can travel.

Wayuunaiki translation and certified translation

Wayuunaiki is written in the Latin alphabet, using ü for a central vowel and an apostrophe for the glottal stop. Education programmes in Colombia and Venezuela have produced broadly similar spelling conventions that are not identical, so we confirm whether your readers are in La Guajira, Zulia or both. Typical work includes health and nutrition leaflets, humanitarian notices, consent forms and community information.

Identity cards, birth certificates and court papers from both countries are issued in Spanish. Certified translations from Spanish, with a signed statement of accuracy, are accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers, and we can manage them alongside the Wayuunaiki work.

Transcription and language analysis

We transcribe interviews, consultations and recorded testimony in Wayuunaiki, with time stamps and English translation, marking passages in Spanish. For immigration cases involving questions of origin or nationality, we can arrange language analysis (LADO) with specialist analysts.

Sectors we support in Wayuu

Our vetted, trained and qualified Wayuunaiki linguists can support humanitarian and migration services, nutrition and healthcare programmes, family and legal advisers, NGOs and charities, and researchers. One SILA Linguists® project team coordinates each assignment, and all linguists work under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR. For families split across the border, that consistency means the same careful handling of names, clans and dates in every document and conversation.

Good to know

Working with Wayuu

Interpreting

  • Wayuunaiki speakers in rural La Guajira and Zulia, especially older people and women, may have limited Spanish. In health, social care and legal settings we check whether Wayuunaiki or Spanish is the client's stronger language. Family relationships and clan affiliation can be central to the matters discussed, and an interpreter who understands Wayuu kinship terms avoids confusion.
  • Remote video or telephone interpreting, sometimes with relay through Spanish, is the most practical approach for Wayuu.

Translation

  • Wayuunaiki is written in the Latin alphabet, using letters such as ü for a central vowel and an apostrophe for the glottal stop. Spelling conventions developed through education programmes in Colombia and Venezuela are broadly similar but not identical, so we confirm the intended readership. Civil documents from both countries are in Spanish and are translated from Spanish for certified use.
