Gusii interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Gusii, or Ekegusii, is the language of the Abagusii people of south-western Kenya. We arrange Gusii interpreters and translators for public service and legal work.
Ekegusii
guzEkegusii is a Bantu language spoken mainly in Kisii and Nyamira counties, in the highlands east of Lake Victoria. It is surrounded by Nilotic languages, including Dholuo and Kipsigis, and its closest relatives are Kuria and other Bantu languages of the Lake Victoria region.
Two main varieties are often described, a northern Rogoro and a southern Maate form, which differ mainly in pronunciation. Gusii is written in the Latin alphabet and has a Bible translation, radio programming and some educational material.
Most Gusii speakers also speak Swahili and English, the national and official languages of Kenya. English is the usual language of official documents.

Ekegusii is the Bantu language of Kisii and Nyamira counties in the highlands east of Lake Victoria, surrounded by Nilotic neighbours such as Dholuo and Kipsigis. SILA Linguists® provides Gusii interpreters, translators and transcribers for healthcare, courts, police, immigration practitioners and research teams across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Because 'Kisii' is also the name of the main town and county, we book under the name Gusii or Ekegusii, so there is no confusion about the language your client needs.
Most Gusii speakers also use Swahili and English, and for a short routine matter some will prefer one of them. When a person must explain symptoms, describe events to the police or give evidence in court, a Gusii interpreter lets them speak in their own words and catch every nuance of what is asked. Northern Rogoro and southern Maate speech differ mainly in pronunciation, and our interpreters handle both comfortably.
Many Gusii interpreters live in Kenya or across the diaspora, so telephone and video are effective ways to connect them with your client. The telephone service runs day and night, all year, and video sessions take place through the SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom and similar systems. Face-to-face interpreting can be arranged for hearings and longer consultations, and you can ask for a male or female interpreter where the subject is personal.
Gusii is written in the Latin alphabet, with a Bible translation, radio programmes and some educational material, but publications mark its seven vowels in different ways. We agree the convention with you and apply it consistently. Common requests include patient information, consent forms, witness statements, letters and translations of recorded material into English.
Kenyan official documents are generally issued in English. When a Gusii-language document must be submitted to an authority, our certified translation includes a signed and dated statement of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, tribunals and other UK authorities.
Health and social research in western Kenya often produces interviews in Ekegusii. We supply verbatim, time-stamped transcripts with English translation, marking where speakers move into Swahili or English. The same service suits police interview recordings and audio evidence for legal proceedings. Where immigration questions arise, we can also advise on language analysis to determine origin (LADO).
Our vetted, trained and qualified Gusii linguists can support NHS and private healthcare, police forces, courts and solicitors, immigration advisers, universities and research institutes. With SILA Linguists® you have one team managing every request, vetted linguists and confidentiality protected by NDAs and UK GDPR.
