Romanian is the official language of Romania and of Moldova, where legislation now uses the name Romanian in place of Moldovan. Romanian speakers also live in Ukraine, Serbia and Hungary, and there are large Romanian communities in Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany and France. Romanian is also one of the most widely spoken languages in the UK after English.

Romanian descends from the Latin spoken in the Roman provinces along the Danube. Its grammar and core vocabulary are Romance, but it has many words of Slavic, Hungarian, Turkish and Greek origin. Like Bulgarian, it places the definite article at the end of nouns (om, a man; omul, the man). Regional speech in Moldova, Transylvania, Banat and Oltenia has distinctive features, but the standard is shared.

Romanian uses the Latin alphabet with ă, â, î, ș and ț.

SILA Linguists®

Romanian interpreting and certified Romanian translation with SILA Linguists®

Romanian is the official language of Romania and of Moldova, and it is spoken in Ukraine, Serbia and Hungary and by large communities in Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany and France. SILA Linguists® provides Romanian interpreters, translators and transcribers to healthcare, employers, police, courts, housing teams, schools and investors across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Romanian interpreting for health, work and justice

Some Romanian citizens speak Hungarian as their first language, especially in Transylvania, and others speak Romani, so we check the client's preferred language before booking. Romanian distinguishes polite dumneavoastră from familiar tu, and our interpreters follow the appropriate register.

Our Romanian interpreters are prepared for hospitals, GP surgeries and maternity units, employment and workplace safety in agriculture, construction and logistics, housing and local authority services, schools and children's services, police interviews, courts and probation. Interpreters attend in person, take calls by telephone at any hour, and join by video through our SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom or similar. Investors and businesses can book consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting for negotiations, due diligence meetings and conferences.

Romanian translation with the correct ș and ț

The letters ș and ț should carry a comma below; many fonts and older systems substitute ş and ţ with a cedilla, a common error in names and official documents that our translators correct. We keep names exactly as in the identity documents, including the order of given names. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificates, diplomas, driving documents and court papers carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by employers, admissions offices and other UK authorities. In Romania, authorised translators are approved by the Ministry of Justice and translations are often notarised, so check what a Romanian authority needs.

For employers and investors, we translate contracts, safety documentation, staff handbooks and corporate documents, and localise websites and software for Romanian and Moldovan users.

Romanian transcription and subtitling

Police interviews, phone calls, voice notes and family court recordings in Romanian are transcribed with time codes and translated into English, with Hungarian or Romani passages labelled, and we subtitle workplace and training videos.

Where our Romanian linguists work

Our vetted, trained and qualified Romanian linguists can support NHS and maternity services, agriculture, construction and logistics employers, police, courts and probation, housing teams and councils, schools and children's services, and business investors. SILA Linguists® provides one coordinator and vetted Romanian linguists, and files are protected by NDAs and UK GDPR.
