Chichimeca Jonaz
peiChichimeca Jonaz is an Oto-Pamean language of the Oto-Manguean family, related to Pame, Otomi and Mazahua. It is spoken mainly in the community of Misión de Chichimecas near San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, where it remains a living community language. The word Chichimeca was used historically by Nahuatl speakers and the Spanish for many peoples of northern Mexico; the language spoken today is specifically Chichimeca Jonaz, and its speakers call themselves Úza'.
It is one of very few Indigenous languages with a long-established community of speakers in Guanajuato. It is tonal and has a complex system of consonants.

SILA Linguists® supports legal teams, healthcare providers, educators and researchers who need to communicate in Chichimeca Jonaz. This Oto-Pamean language, related to Pame, Otomi and Mazahua, is spoken mainly in the community of Misión de Chichimecas near San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, where speakers call themselves Úza'. It remains a living community language. Historically, Chichimeca was a broad label for many northern peoples; the language we provide is specifically Chichimeca Jonaz.
Most speakers are bilingual in Spanish, so our first step is to ask which language the person prefers for the matter in hand. Some choose Spanish for everyday business but want Chichimeca Jonaz for a medical history or a statement in which every detail counts. Where the Indigenous language is needed, we work with community interpreters and use relay through Spanish for English-language settings.
Legal proceedings are a key setting, because Mexican law recognises the right of Indigenous people to an interpreter there. Our interpreters usually join by video, through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and telephone interpreting can be arranged at any hour. Hearings and police interviews are interpreted consecutively, and female or male interpreters are available on request.
Chichimeca Jonaz is tonal and has a complex consonant system. Its Latin-alphabet spelling, developed by linguists and education programmes, marks tone and special consonants, and our translators follow the convention used in the community's schools. Written use is limited, so for health information, consent forms or cultural texts we often combine a short written version with an audio recording.
Official Mexican documents are issued in Spanish and translated from Spanish for certified use. Our certified translations carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers.
Chichimeca Jonaz is one of very few Indigenous languages with a long-established community of speakers in Guanajuato, which makes recordings valuable for linguists, educators and the community itself. We provide time-stamped transcripts with English or Spanish translation and can produce subtitles for educational and documentary video, flagging uncertain tones or words rather than guessing.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Chichimeca Jonaz linguists can support courts, solicitors and legal advisers, hospitals and community health services, schools and education programmes, universities and documentation projects, and cultural organisations. One SILA Linguists® project team coordinates every request, and all linguists are bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR, an important safeguard in a small, close-knit community.
