Cuicatec is a Mixtecan language spoken in the Cañada region of northern Oaxaca, Mexico. SILA Linguists can help arrange Cuicatec interpreting and translation.
Dbaku
Cuicatec (Cuicateco in Spanish) belongs to the Mixtecan branch of the Oto-Manguean family, together with Mixtec and Triqui. It is spoken in the district of Cuicatlán in northern Oaxaca, in communities such as San Juan Tepeuxila, Santa María Pápalo and San Andrés Teotilalpam, and Tepeuxila and Teutila Cuicatec are distinct varieties. Speakers call the language Dbaku or similar forms.
Like its relatives, Cuicatec is tonal.

SILA Linguists® provides Cuicatec interpreters and translators for healthcare services, legal teams and community and education projects. Cuicatec, or Cuicateco, belongs to the Mixtecan branch of the Oto-Manguean family, alongside Mixtec and Triqui, and is spoken in the district of Cuicatlán in northern Oaxaca, in communities such as San Juan Tepeuxila, Santa María Pápalo and San Andrés Teotilalpam. Speakers call their language Dbaku or a similar form.
Most Cuicatec speakers also speak Spanish, so the first question is which language the client wants to use. Where Cuicatec is needed, we look for an interpreter from the same area, as Tepeuxila and Teutila Cuicatec are distinct varieties. Mixtec speakers do not reliably understand Cuicatec despite the family link, so we do not offer a Mixtec interpreter in its place.
Because Cuicatec communities are small, an interpreter may know the client or their relatives. Before every assignment we check for possible conflicts of interest and remind everyone involved of confidentiality, which is especially important in health and legal matters. Remote work is the most practical approach: video calls on the SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's system, or a telephone connection at any hour. Spanish relay links the Cuicatec interpreter to English-speaking professionals, and hearings and consultations proceed consecutively.
Like its relatives, Cuicatec is tonal. Spelling has been developed for education and religious texts, including ways of marking tone, but written use is limited. For patient information, consent forms or community notices, we often recommend a short written translation accompanied by a recorded version, and we confirm the variant before starting.
Birth certificates, identity papers and court documents from Mexico are in Spanish. Our certified translations of these carry a signed statement confirming their accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers.
Recordings of Cuicatec speech help educators and researchers working with a small community language. Our transcribers produce time-coded transcripts with an English version, flag uncertain tones or words for a second check, and mark passages where speakers switch into Spanish. Subtitles can be added to educational video.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Cuicatec linguists can support hospitals and clinics, courts and legal advisers, schools, universities and community development projects. At SILA Linguists®, one coordinator manages the request from enquiry to delivery, and every linguist signs a non-disclosure agreement and follows UK GDPR, so a client in a small community can speak with confidence.
