Belize Kriol is the most widely shared everyday language of Belize, used by people of many backgrounds alongside English and Spanish. SILA Linguists provides Belize Kriol interpreting and translation for legal, healthcare and public service clients.
Bileez Kriol
bzjBelize Kriol (Bileez Kriol) is an English-based Creole language that developed during the colonial period among enslaved Africans and their descendants and European settlers in what was then British Honduras. It shares much vocabulary with English but has its own grammar, pronunciation and idioms, and English speakers who have not been exposed to it often misunderstand it. It is the first language of Creole Belizeans and a common second language for Garifuna, Maya, Mestizo and other Belizeans. English is the official language of Belize.
Kriol has a standard spelling system and is used in radio, music, literature and, increasingly, public information.

SILA Linguists® provides Belize Kriol interpreters, transcribers and translators for courts, police, healthcare and mental health services, immigration teams and public information campaigns. Belize Kriol, or Bileez Kriol, is an English-based Creole that developed in colonial British Honduras. It shares much vocabulary with English but has its own grammar, pronunciation and idioms, and English speakers unfamiliar with it often misunderstand it. It is the first language of Creole Belizeans and a common second language across Belize, where English is official.
Many Kriol speakers also speak Belizean English and move between the two depending on the situation. In a courtroom, police interview or medical consultation, a speaker may appear to follow standard English yet miss important details, or may express themselves far more fully in Kriol. A Kriol interpreter makes sure testimony is understood accurately and that the speaker's own words are conveyed, rather than quietly 'corrected' into English.
Our interpreters know Kriol grammar, including the markers mi for past, di for ongoing action, and wan or gwen for future, which carry meaning easily lost in a loose rendering. We provide Belize Kriol interpreting face to face where local interpreters are based, by telephone around the clock, and by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform. Mental health assessments, court hearings and police interviews are interpreted consecutively.
Transcription is a key part of our Kriol service. Police interviews, recorded calls, body-worn camera footage and evidential recordings need transcribers who hear Kriol accurately and do not normalise it into standard English. We deliver time-stamped transcripts with a faithful English translation alongside, so that a court can see both what was said and what it means. Subtitles can be added for evidential or broadcast video.
Kriol is written using an established spelling system, which spells words as they are pronounced, as in bileez for Belize. Kriol translation is well suited to public health campaigns, community information and subtitling. Official documents in Belize are issued in English, so certified translation from Kriol is rarely needed, but we can certify translations of Kriol material, such as messages or letters used as evidence, with a signed statement of accuracy accepted by UK authorities such as the courts and the Home Office.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Kriol linguists can support courts, solicitors, police and probation, NHS and mental health services, immigration teams, broadcasters and public health campaigns. One SILA Linguists® project team manages every assignment under confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.
