Popoluca interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Popoluca is the name for several Mixe-Zoquean languages of southern Veracruz, Mexico. It is not the same as Popoloca of Puebla. SILA Linguists can help identify the right Popoluca language and arrange interpreting or translation.
Popoluca
The name Popoluca, from a Nahuatl word for people who spoke another language, covers four distinct languages of the Mixe-Zoque family in southern Veracruz. Sierra Popoluca, the largest, is spoken in the Sierra de Santa Marta around Soteapan and Hueyapan de Ocampo and is a Zoquean language. Sayula Popoluca, spoken in Sayula de Alemán, is a Mixean language. Oluta Popoluca (Mixean) and Texistepec Popoluca (Zoquean) have very few remaining speakers.
These languages are not mutually intelligible with each other, and none is related to Popoloca of Puebla, an Oto-Manguean language.

SILA Linguists® arranges interpreters and translators for the Popoluca languages of southern Veracruz, supporting healthcare providers, legal teams, schools and language documentation projects. The name, from a Nahuatl word for people who spoke another language, covers four distinct Mixe-Zoque languages. Sierra Popoluca, the largest, is spoken around Soteapan and Hueyapan de Ocampo; Sayula Popoluca in Sayula de Alemán; Oluta and Texistepec Popoluca have very few remaining speakers.
The four Popoluca languages are not mutually intelligible with one another, and none is related to Popoloca of Puebla, an Oto-Manguean language. We therefore confirm that the client is from Veracruz and then ask for the town, which tells us whether Sierra, Sayula, Oluta or Texistepec Popoluca is needed. Sierra and Texistepec Popoluca are Zoquean; Sayula and Oluta are Mixean.
Spanish is widely spoken in these towns, yet elders and some women in the Sierra de Santa Marta may prefer Popoluca for medical and legal matters, and we can send a woman interpreter for those conversations. Sessions usually run over a video call in the SILA Linguists® app or any conferencing tool your team already trusts, with a Spanish-English interpreter completing the relay, while urgent questions can go by phone at any time. Legal interviews and clinical consultations are interpreted consecutively.
Sierra Popoluca and Sayula Popoluca both have Roman-letter spelling systems, with materials for bilingual education and religious use, and spelling conventions differ between the two. We translate health information, school materials and community notices into the right language and convention, and can add audio versions for readers who prefer to listen.
Veracruz identity papers and civil records are in Spanish; when they are needed abroad we translate them into English and sign a certificate confirming the translation is faithful, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and admissions teams.
With Oluta and Texistepec Popoluca now spoken by very few people, recordings of those languages are of great value to linguists and to the communities. Each Popoluca recording is transcribed with time codes and turned into English or Spanish; we identify which language each speaker uses, and flag uncertain passages for expert review. Speaker names, village names and kinship terms are checked carefully, because in a language with so few speakers each detail may be impossible to record again.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Popoluca linguists can support health centres in the Sierra de Santa Marta and beyond, lawyers and courts, schools, universities and language documentation teams. With SILA Linguists®, one coordinator stays with your project, and NDAs plus UK GDPR keep every recording and document private.
