Purépecha interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Purépecha is the Indigenous language of the highlands of Michoacán in western Mexico and has no known relatives. SILA Linguists can arrange Purépecha interpreting and translation.
P'urhépecha
Purépecha (P'urhépecha) is a language isolate: it is not related to any other language in Mexico or elsewhere. It was the language of the Tarascan state, which resisted the Aztecs before the Spanish conquest. Today it is spoken in four main areas of Michoacán: the Meseta Purépecha around Paracho and Cherán, the Lake Pátzcuaro region, the Cañada de los Once Pueblos and the Ciénega de Zacapu.
The older Spanish name Tarasco is still found in documents, but many speakers consider it inappropriate and prefer Purépecha. Western Highland Purépecha is sometimes listed separately.

SILA Linguists® provides Purépecha interpreting, translation and transcription for healthcare providers, legal teams, immigration services and education and cultural projects. Purépecha, or P'urhépecha, is a language isolate, unrelated to any other language in Mexico or elsewhere, and was the language of the Tarascan state that resisted the Aztecs. It is spoken in four main areas of Michoacán: the Meseta around Paracho and Cherán, the Lake Pátzcuaro region, the Cañada de los Once Pueblos and the Ciénega de Zacapu.
The four regional varieties differ in vocabulary and pronunciation, though speakers generally understand each other, so we ask for the client's home community and choose an interpreter from the same region where we can. The older Spanish name Tarasco still appears in documents, but many speakers consider it inappropriate, and our interpreters use Purépecha.
Michoacán has seen substantial emigration to the United States, and Purépecha interpreting is needed in immigration, legal and healthcare settings there. Many speakers are bilingual in Spanish, but older people and children from some Meseta communities may speak little Spanish, and a child or grandparent deserves to be heard in their own language. Our interpreters usually join by video, in the SILA Linguists® app or a meeting tool of your choice, with Spanish relay where needed; a telephone service is available around the clock. Legal and immigration interviews are interpreted consecutively, and the client may request a man or a woman as interpreter.
Written Purépecha uses an apostrophe for aspirated consonants (p', t', k'), the digraph rh and the letter ï for a high central vowel. These characters must survive formatting, and we check them in every document, form and subtitle. Spelling conventions vary somewhat between publishers and regions, so we agree one with you before translating health, school and community materials.
Official documents from Michoacán are in Spanish. When certification is needed, we translate them into English and sign a statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Michoacán records required by American immigration officials are translated with a signed certificate confirming accuracy.
We transcribe Purépecha interviews, oral histories and recorded evidence with time codes and an English version, noting the region of the speaker. Cultural organisations documenting music, crafts and festivals can ask for subtitles in English or Spanish. For asylum claims that depend on origin, language analysis (LADO) can be arranged.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Purépecha linguists can support hospitals and clinics, courts and solicitors, immigration services, schools and cultural organisations. SILA Linguists® gives each project a dedicated coordinator, and every linguist signs a confidentiality agreement and follows UK GDPR. Purépecha-speaking families in the US can have an interpreter for immigration court, conversations with their lawyer, clinic appointments and school enrolment, in person or remotely.
